Mucho Nacho Jalapenos NOT hot!!!

Hi Everyone! This year I planted Mucho Nacho Jalapenos for their size and slight increased heat. According to my supplier they are supposed to be slightly hotter than an average jalapeno. However, I have picked about three good crops so far and none of them are not near as hot as I expected. Granted, they are not bell pepper mild, but you can eat them seeds and all without a drink of water with some residual heat. Can anyone help me understand why? Am I giving them too much water? Not enough water? Our average daily temps have been 103F, however, the past few days and week to come is supposed to be around 106F. I thought jalapenos loved heat. Any and all suggestions would be great!

I would let them dry out and then soak them ,dry out, etc.

Yes, I had brine left over from both batches of Bread & butter jalapenos/cowboy candy. It is undiluted vinegar, no water. Only spices and sugar are in the recipe in addition to the vinegar. I was hoping to use the leftover brine for making a batch of refrigerator peppers, but wasn't sure of the quality or taste. I also didn't know if I needed to simmer them in the brine before refrigerating, or just adding them to the brine in the refrigerator. Thanks for the reply. Jill

Looks like that evil pepper maggot is still tormenting our plants. Anyone have a solution for it? I think last year was the worst and those weevils were still on some plants even up until November 2008 even in cooler weather here. I burned them via cigarettes, those nasty buggers.

My DW bought me one of those racks and they are pretty neat. I use it quite a bit. There are a lot of variations but the basic method is to cut the stem end off the peppers or slice in half if you want and remove the seeds and membrane. Then stuff with a combo of cheddar and cream cheese (you can add anything you like, italian sausage etc....just mix it all up together in a bowl and fill the jalapenos. I use my finger...it's easier...and then wrap 1/4 slice of bacon around them. (I pre-cook the bacon about 1/2 way to cook even with the peppers) and stick a water-soaked toothpick through and set them in the rack. Put on a barbeque (I use a Traeger smoker) on indirect heat until the peppers are soft and tender and the bacon is cooked through. Sometimes in the summer when the peppers are coming in I can make an entire meal of these! They are good! Good luck. Duane

Mine aren't hot either. I like the taste but I'm disappointed that there's no kick.

I picked this red, ripe Mucho Nacho Jalapeno last weekend. It had such a great flavor to it, and a nice bite. I would say this little baby was hot! ;)

I'd guess that you might have a nutrient problem. I grow both "standard" jalapeÃ±os and mucho nachos, and the mucho nachos are noticeably hotter than the standard type.

Well, thank goodness, I thought it was only me. My jalapenos are not hot at all. Made some glorious salsa that turned out more like a tomato relish because of the distinct lack of heat. It's plenty hot here in Texas and I know there is not a nitrogen overload, so who knows? Got some other plants that I'm waiting on, hopefully they will be hotter.

The pH level of your soil will greatly affect the heat level of peppers
