What is best for winter storage of small Plumeria

I have been buying pots, planning on digging up my plumeria to store in my garage for the winter. I spoke to a person at the plumeria society in Corpus Christi, he said he stores his plumeria in his garage. He digs them up, shakes off the dirt, and removes all the leaves. He then puts them all into dry bucket in his garage, and stores for the winter. In spring he replants them outside. Is this the best way to store them? I put them in pots last year, but lost some because I put them directly on concrete. What is the best way to store these plants, in pots with potting soil, or dry in buckets? I only have small plants, 1 yr or less. The dry storage appeals to me, but I am afraid of taking the chance and losing my plants again. What would you do? Barbra
