Homemade Hot Sauce

Ok, I grew some scotch bonnet peppers. And I made some hot sauce by grinding up the peppers (with seeds), some vinegar, garlic, carrots and onion. But, then I made the mistake of canning it up and from what I'm told, it's probably not safe to eat. So, I'd like to do this again, this time without screwing up.

What are your thoughts? How long would this store for without going bad? Is there a risk of botulism? That's my main fear.
