Bacterial Leaf spot?

Greetings!

Almost all of my peppers are suffering from BLS - those with plastic mulch, on barer ground, and straw mulched - even those in new pepper areas!

A farmer at a party the other night mentioned that in our climate he had to change to all resistant hybrids for the disease and now has no more trouble with it.

Can you recommend varities and purveyors for seed that is resistant?

Sometimes, the plants seem to recover enough to give me at least SOME crop - they are looking better, but we will have scarce hot peppers this year from it all.

Hey Glad Gardner..!!!

Its not as bad as you think.??? I had BLSpot about 8-12 weeks ago and cured it with "Horse Chestnut Compound which is very easily obtained.! My greenhouse and plants were riddled with it every plant had spots everywhere on them. I sprayed the plants all over once and removed the affected leaves and they recovered beautifully and are growing great now.
Just my humble opinion but works.

Biology Several races of Xanthomonas affect peppers. The organism survives in the soil on infected plant residue and on some weed hosts. It is also seed borne. It can be present on greenhouse surfaces, trays, and equipment which are not properly sanitized. The bacteria can enter the plant through stomata and wounded tissue. High humidity and moisture encourage disease development. Period of Activity Transplanting through early flowering and fruit set. Bacterial spot prefers temperatures of 24- 30Ã¯Â¿Â½C (75- 86Ã¯Â¿Â½F). Abundant rainfall and high humidity aid infection. Scouting Notes Disease symptoms can appear in the greenhouse during transplant production or in the field. Once symptoms appear, it is difficult to manage this disease. Fruit lesions are not always present. Symptoms often appear different depending on the race of the bacteria, the pepper cultivar, or the growing conditions. Thresholds None established. Management Notes This is a very common disease, which can appear throughout the season, but is of most concern the earlier it appears, as it will have more time to cause economic damage. Use disease-free or disinfected seed. Do not plant diseased or unhealthy transplants. Avoid working in fields when foliage is wet. Some pepper varieties have tolerance to some races of this disease. A preventative program using registered fixed copper fungicides can reduce disease problems if used during transplant and early field production to keep bacterial populations low. Overhead irrigation and wind-blown or splashing water can spread the disease.

Hey esox, thx for chiming in, all feedback is welcome and gives me more ideas to brainstorm. The middle plants were getting the same sun, and at that point probably a similar amount of circulation since there was still space between the plants. I caught it this year earlier and before all the canopies connected, like they are now. It may be perception but it seems like the infection can cross a air-span of 6 inches to a foot (wind/rain), unless i'm wrong and it was being pulled in from the roots in those instances. I'm suspecting that there was either an infected spot there in the soil, or those plants were infected right from seed and waited for hot/rainy stressful weather to overcome the plant's immune system. It could also be dragged in via pants and shoes and maybe last years gardening tools unfortunately ( i don't recall disinfecting everything from last year). The stuff is pretty contagious from what i've been reading and experiencing.

Jalapmann, going to throw a few thoughts and ideas your way. BLS is pretty common in my area. What most of us do is just stay on top of it till about mid or end of July. By that time that plants are large enough out-pace any new infections. It does the most harm with young plants, if left unchecked. Turning over the soil once in the fall, and again in the springtime supposedly helps (i am not sure of this). Remove all plants at the end of the season. Innoculating your soil with good bacteria can help thin-out the bad stuff (certain fertilizers, like Tomato-Tone contain beneficial bacteria). A layer of mulch after plant-out prevents soil splash-up. Preventative sprayng, starting from plant-out, helps the most. The past few years i've been spraying around once a week, and after rainstorms. I alternate weekly between Copper concentrate and Serenade garden disease control. I usually stop spraying at the end of July since the plants are big and healthy enough to fend for themselves. There have been a couple of bad years where i sprayed the entire summer though. Technically you should also soak your fresh harvested seed, and soak it again before sowing them in the springtime. I included a link below to help better explain. Good luck. Amair, i live in warm, humid zone 6a! The weather seems ideal for microbial problems this year

I had read of horse chestnut root for vein health, but not for BLS! Please do clue me in on that :)
BTW- i get to tour the Highlands and Islands of your country next month - am excited to see your part of the world for the first time!

Well drop in gardner your more than welcome and see my plants.!!! Im near Glasgow.

The horse chestnut stuff is a anti bacterial thingy that kills anything in the soil, foliage and plant. You would know this if you smelled the stuff as its like smelling uranium..lol...It will kill you the smell is so power full yer eyes water if smelled. So the bacteria hasnt a chance. Its especially great for young seedlings as it stops dampning off in them when they are vulnerable to fungus in the early days of growth.
Its cheap to buy and easily available at any garden store.

I think I have the same problem with my peppers. But it's only with the one green and one purple pepper plant that I have. My yellow peppers are growing wonderfully, save for somesunscald.

I am in Elizabethtown, not too far from Glasgow, where do you get this chestnut stuff? I tried Lowe's and they didn't have it that I could see.

I got it in a garden store in ayrshire, scotland. I dont think its hard to get maybe B&Q will have it..?
