Holy Moles--recipes, anyone?

I just couldn't resist buying this plant because of the name and because it had such a nice pepper already on it. They are long and thin, about 6-7 inches, and turn brownish when ripe. They grow very fast, too.
Has anyone used these in recipes?
(I am sort of embarrassed at admitting I bought this but I am a newbie. I am pretty sure it is not a hot pepper, either.)

HM is very similar to Chilaca, if not the same thing. Dried one I think is called Pasilla.So it is used as dry pepper. It has alot more flavor when dried, IMO. I grew it last year and I am growing it again. And I intend to air dry them when ripe.

Recent thread on this. Dry and grind then use w/ancho powder and cascabel powder for a more authentic Chile powder.
May also use Guajillo and Chile Dr Arbor.
It's traditional use is in a mole sauce.

No reversion in any of my Holy Mole, but if it did it would think it would have to revert back to its parent "Guacamole"Â. (I have however had Guacamole sport solid green eyes). If you are planning to replace your Holy Mole, you might want to check out "Cathedral Windows", a Stained Glass sport that is a brighter likeness of Holy Mole. I settled on the Orca, after so many raves here, and I'm very happy with it - two years in. I love the bottom grid; it keeps everything cleaner (except the grid, which does need scrubbing from time to time) and it fixed the height problem for me, by elevating the "bottom" an inch.. I haven't found myself using the shelf option. It's a busy sink (family of 6) so nothing would be able to drip dry there. Re-reading this post 2 years later, tho', I am going to consider pulling it out and putting a bowl of something there that I'm working with (the compost while I peel?) The quality is excellent and I like the width. We have both a faucet and a filter and that gives us two streams of water, which is handy. I rarely have trouble washing something flat, just my widest baking sheets. With my extra counter depth, I could have gotten a larger sink (or at least rectangular) but I like that the swoop of the Orca allows the faucet to nestle in and be slightly closer to the front - seems more ergonomic. Overall, I'm pleased, and while slightly embarrassed that I obsessed over something for so long, I am a serious researcher and am glad I explored all the options. Good luck!

I'm not surprised since their stores are packed full of this stuff, they have quite a selection of home decor items along with all the lighting. Most of it is against the wall when you walk into the store. They usually group items on tables according to style so for instance on one table they'll put all their Mission style lamps along with accessories that coordinate with that style. I am drooling over the 48" Thermador! That does sound like the Holy Grail. Here is my tentative layout. The window configuration is currently not what is shown here, but is based on having a 30" stove (plus 2 cooks, prep and cleanup sinks, and fridge in the pantry wall). Unfortunately a 48" range would mean smaller windows, and DH would probably veto that (windows are south-facing with nice views and great light).I first posted a very similar draft here and am still considering the suggestions offered there. If anyone has suggestions as to where I could put in a single built-in oven, I would gratefully consider them! I'd rather not give up precious lower-cabinet space on the window wall, but maybe the uppers in the southwest (upper-right) corner could extend down to the countertop and I could put something there. Another alternative might be in the fridge wall (although then my little table might become a barrier island). Other ideas? I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off today but will be able to thoughtfully respond by this weekend. Thanks again for all your helpful posts.

I've been growing them for years. My favorite use, dry them, rehydrate (yes, Kevin, I said rehydrate ;-) you have convinced me), blend till smooth, and add to chili... it's wonderful in chili. Or, if you have 20-30 hrs make an authentic mole sauce. ;-)

Great info. I never dried chile peppers before. I am guessing we can use our food dehydrator or low temps in the oven. I will do a search for more info on the process.
Does mole sauce really take that long??

Pasilla is a staple in moles from Oaxaca and/or other places.

Chilaca/holy Mole ca be air dried b stringing and hanging. But I suppose dehydrator can be better and faster.

Yeah, I watched a chef (Rick Bayless?) make a "quick" mole. You kept thinking, "Ah, there it is." Then he starts on a whole new component! A true mole might have layers of flavor that can be appreciated only by bloodhounds.

Obviously, I've never made one. But I've had some mediocre ones... Even mediocre ones are good.

Yep, Dennis, I agree. Considering when someone asks me what a some variety of pepper tastes like my first response, "a pepper." or, an annuum, or a chinense. I'm really jealous of those people that can pick out flavors and give you a list of the flavors you get when eating a certain pepper... I'm not one.
