With an indelible marker, mark the date on the cutting when you stuck it in water. Then you'll know how long it takes. I regret not marking the dates I started each of my individual cuttings.

Thanks, I write names and dates on my brug and plumeria cuttings and anything else with stems wide enough to write on. I'm still trying to ID some of my passion flowers whose tags got blown off in a storm.

Karyn it can take 5 days to 2 weeks for them to show the cottage cheese on the stem. You can check them for rot by squeezing the part under the water. I only put the water 3" up the stem.
I had one cutting that was in water for 3 months, had lots of roots before I got around to planting it. But I don't advocate doing that!
Let us know what the out come was please!
PS: You can also use the top of your frig or hot water heater for bottom heat.

Thanks Wanda. I'd have never thought about the top of the fridge or hot water heater. I couldn't do it in my kitchen because the fridge is built in flush with the cabinets but I have one in the garage that might work. Does it matter if there's no natural light?

You should have some sort of light, why not in a sunny window? Not sure of your temps right now but if it is still warm outside put them out in the sun. If you put them in the sun use a plastic container not a glass jar.

Wanda I have them in a good location now, no problems. I was thinking about what you said about the fridge radiating bottom heat for future reference. Our kitchen fridge is built in (no space on top) but we have a regular one in the garage. I would have to use artificial light if I were to use that one.

I think the big AG cutting that I got is getting roots! They are coming out of the bottom cut end, not the sides. It appears that they are developing in between the outer hard layer and the inner pithy layer (both layers are still quite firm). I don't know the proper names of the stem structures. The other AG cutting that broke off my plant started rotting on the bottom so I've recut it and dipped it in rooting powder. I'll let it dry and plant it in a perlite mix like I usually do.

That sounds good Karyn. I stuck both of mine in soil mixture and they seem to be getting some claws/leaves. They like this hot sun down here in Florida. Also the one I got off e-bay, a Samoan Red, is starting to form leaves on the main stem. Well, I know their not water rooting, but I love seeing the leaves coming out.

P.S. the brugs are doing good. small jam yellow nubby all over. Big jam yellow, kinda slow, not doing much. The Charles Grimaldi is shooting roots straight out of the sides!

I'm so glad your one is starting to get roots! One thing I would like to mention is make sure to sterilize your cutting tool.
There is also a method of rooting in straight perlight and a clear plastic bottle with holes in the bottom. I have never used this method but so many people keep pulling the stick out to see if they have rooted and do more damage.
I've been on this forum 5 years and have read it all!

I usually root my cuttings in a mix that's mainly perlite. Never heard of using a clear bottle. I can understand why some people want to pull out the cuttings to check them. If I did that I'd probably break what roots were already there. lol I'm trying to grow some clivia from seed and have to resist the temptation to dig down and see if anything is happening with the seeds. Those can take 8 months to germinate. The only time I pull a cutting is if nothing has happened in a couple months or if a cutting has suddenly stopped growing. I've had cuttings take over 3 months to start growing, usually the mid-stem cuts.

The cutting that's in water still appears to be doing well and has what look like roots developing on the bottom cut end. When I changed the water today I noticed white nubs along the submerged portion of the stem. They look like the roots that develop on my brug and iochroma cuttings. Are those also roots? I thought that plumerias roots grew from the bottom. Someone just posted a pic in a thread titled "roots on an inflo" and these look exactly the same. What are they?

There is a gal who posted on the first message on the forum about water cuttings..has those cottage cheese nubs? not familiar with this..asking what is this. Pehaps someone can answer her..Cottage cheese nubs? become roots?

Being other plants are being mentioned on here. .Does anyone know if Gardenia are like Plumeria that you have to stop the feeding????? I am new at gardenia, have one that has done so well all summer, lots of blooms. Am I suppose to stop feeding it...is tropical?? jasmine too?

Those are root nubs, you can pot your cutting up now! If you wait till it gets roots you will have to be very careful not to break the new roots when you plant. Congradulations!!

Gardenias are heavy feeders. I fertalize mine with an acid fert. 4 time a year and in between I throw coffee grounds and pickle juice around them. I just noticed mine is getting yellow leaves so I will go out and give it some epson salt deluted, 2 TBL salts to gallon of water.

Are you serious about the coffee grounds and PICKLE JUICE!!
Wanda, why pickle juice (sweet ot dill?) What does the pickle juice do for the gardenia? Acid??? I am really interested. Email me... please, rannlen@aol.com

oh that is interesting pickle juice really.ha . I have been feeding my gardenia on the plumeria schedule what I feed the plumeria, every two weeks..When I feed plumeria food, superthrive, etc..put it in the gardenia..b-1 put it in..the plant has have thrived and bloomed all summer, then grows, then blooms and is so shiny and healthy..read was the plant from hell.

.I did put in coffee grounds, but no pickle juice..did that help? ha..

I heard it has to go dormant, and stop feeding..is that true?

I beleive the pickle juice is acid. It's just something that I've heard over the years. I pour either one, sweet or dill. It hasn't killed it, LOL!
I'm not one to fertilize alot so when I have an empty jar I use it up on the gardenia.
My gardenia doesn't go dormant here.

so you have a "pickled gardenia..ha ha" Ok..will continue to feed, until it might get cool...can cool off and get chilly here in January and FEb.....thanks. I am new at growing the gardenias....and says jasmine needs to slow down, feed it with the plumeria food too..
