A good season - Summer Photo Recap

We did not have a blazing hot summer, but it was nice and warm and humid. Here are some highlights from this year's plumeria growing season. Enjoy!

Celadine. Not the best flower size. Not sure why.

Psycho White. Inflo on a rooting cutting.

Keauhou Red (not a registered variety). Spicy fragrance.

Cooktown Sunset (from Florida Colors Nursery - grafted). Nice peachy fragrance.

Guillot's Sunset. Smells like an orchid.

Red Samoan (unregistered). Wavy petal edges give it a distinctive look.

Penang Peach -- five inflos on this plant! Smells like peaches and baby powder. This is my favorite of all my collection. Nice compact growth, good bloomer. Flowers get more red with heat and sun. Gradually fading to yellow over time.

Another inflo on Penang Peach:

Daisy Wilcox. Nice fragrance, big flowers.

New Orleans Red. Reliable bloomer, not much fragrance.

And I'm still waiting on two more plants to bloom. Not sure there will be enough heat for the buds to develop though.

Wow! For a minute I thought I was in Hawaii! You sure can grow them well in Virginia! Guillot's Sunset is so pretty. My Penang Peach did not bloom this year. I love the fragrance of this plant too. I've always lusted after Daisy Wilcox! New Orleans Red (I like the name) is so pretty. And Miami Rose is gorgeous! How long have you had that plant? I am sure it is in a pot? Thanks for sharing your lovely blooms with us. I hope you have enough heat for your other blooms to open.

Beautiful!! Such awesome flowers. The Penang Peach and Guillot's Sunset are two that I want to add to my collection. Here, in SoCal where I live, the temps. have been in the upper 90's to low 100's and dry. Blazing,
intense sun that just burns the leaves.
It was a joy to see your flowers. Thanks for sharing.

My goldenrods are budding now. Kinda strange. I would hesitate before cutting buds back because the plant has already expended the energy necessary to prepare flowers and depending on the plant, it may not be able to generate enough energy to make another attempt by fall.

"I suppose I'd need a green-house to attempt to hybridize." I wouldn't talk myself out of it too soon. I think a lot of us amateurs make do without a greenhouse (although there are advantages). One advantage for you would be the insulation that snow provides. I can think of at least one cross I would attempt if I lived in your zone and that would be Prairie Sunrise x Morden Sunrise. I just plant out in pots to overwinter outside (unless I end up with too many early germinations- then I bring in under lights). I already have nine new seedlings to start the new season out with: Personally, If I were you, I would look at the Explorer and Parkland series. Carefree Beauty is an excellent mother to start playing around with. I got rid of it because it gave me too many seedlings and it was too tempting to work with (because it's always in bloom). I have at least one keeper from it this year that I plan to carry forward: Carefree Beauty x Pope John Paul II (very fragrant- shrub rose like Carefree Beauty) Also. In a few days I should a have the fourth bloom open on my yellow. Because of its vigor and health I believe Knockout is involved in it somehow. Dad was probably (Knockout x Flirtatious). The small petal size, flower form (inside petals shorter than the outside), and the cherry edging also seem to confirm this. That does NOT explain the extreme doubleness of it though. It is somewhat like another seedling from this year- Flirtatious x (KO x Flirtatious).

how many varieties/plants I grew this year: 9 varieties/20 plants Â 8 OP, 1 hybrid favorites this year and why: Togo Trifle Â very, very tasty, vigorous grower, earlier than most of my tomatoes and extremely prolific. Unfortunately, the first hit by blight (most likely verticillium), but not until 120 days after planting in ground Opalka Â great flavor, very meaty paste tomato, easy to seed and I thought, very pretty. I did have to be careful around the plant because the tomatoes fell off the vine easily. least liked varieties this year and why: Heidi, but only because I also planted Cherokee purple, Black from Tula, Amish Paste, Green Zebra, Brandywine red and Sungold and like those better. Heidi was the least tasty of the bunch, but still had good flavor. It also was extremely prolific, held on the vine forever, completely resisted the blight and is, in fact, still producing tomatoes as I type. what I did that worked: Raised beds roto-tilled (they were just made) with natural clay soil, lots of composted sheep manure (organic), shrimp compost (organic) and lime. Interplanted with Jolly Jester Marigold (grew tall, worked well), Tiger Marigold (too small), Borage, Basil and Cosmos. The whole garden was organic and planted with tons of pollinator/predator insect attracting plants. Plants were trellised or caged and I did not pinch back the suckers. I planted everything WAY TOO CLOSE (I didnÂt believe how big tomatoes would get on the east coast Â now I do), but it worked this year by shading the tomatoes and preventing cracking during the rain and sunscald. I donÂt think IÂll plant that closely again Â might be a recipe for disaster in a wet year. Problems: a)Planting all my seedlings indoors before I even had a garden! I overestimated how quickly I could build the raised beds and didnÂt have enough room by the time they needed to go into the ground. b)Blight (possibly verticillium) about 120+ days after the plants went into the soil. It damaged slowly, only hit some plants/part of the plant and happened after IÂd already had a huge harvest. c) Not securing the cages well enough. They blew over in the wind on top of my peppers. Luckily the roots didnÂt rip out and the peppers survived. surprises this year: How much bigger the plants grew than in California, how many tomatoes I harvested (lots!) and how incredibly tasty everything was. what I'll try next year: Expanding the garden to have a dedicated, securely trellised (away from all peppers) area for the tomatoes. Add more compost and possibly Rootshield for the blight. Also maybe plant some plants later if the blight is time-in-ground dependent. Varieties Â all from this year plus JoeÂs plum, black brandywine, orange strawberry and definitely more plants of Opalka. Also, I will make more salsa with the Togo TrifleÂs. I didnÂt make enough.

I don’t have issues with deer or rabbits, even though both live here, so you will need to look up my suggestions. You didn’t mention desired height, so my suggestions vary considerably. Beyond plants with spring flowers, you can consider plants with nice foliage that bloom whenever, such as the variegated Caryopteris divericata Snow Fairy (fall bloom) or some of the variegated or gold Carex. They would provide interest even when not blooming, so particular bloom season would be less significant. Look at some of the smaller and tidier Iberis/perennial candytuft. White spring bloom, and all year clean, dark green foliage. Some of the taller ones can look somewhat sloppy. Veronica Georgia Blue which is one of my favorite plants. Short, and rambles happily around other plants in either sun or shade. A lot of the low growing Dianthus look great all season. My favorite is Greystone for the crisp white spring flowers and the frosty gray foliage, but there are ones with other flower colors, and leaves range to deep green. You are in a perfect general location for heather/Calluna or Heath/Erica. They flower, but out of flower look almost like delicately needled evergreens and have a range of foliage color, including some that are gold and orange, particularly in winter. Heights vary from about 6” to a couple of feet. I don’t know how they would lookwith that plant grouping. Consider some of the really small shrubs such as some of the under 2’ tall evergreen rhodies or Deutzia such as Chardonnay Pearls or even one of the really small Itea such as Little Henry or Merlot.

Riock- where are you in SoCal? I have several large Guillot's sunsets from Bud Guillot's original tree (Dave got his from me) and I will be cutting some branches next Feb. too large to mail. Wow thats really nice. Great job, those plants look really big and healthy, better than some Ive seen in Florida! I love the fragance most plumerias have, and found out that they seem to be much stronger when the flower is dried up.
Im also waiting on a plumeria to bloom, but it doesnt look like it will be warm enough for it to develop. Their are a few warm days coming, but it looks like it will be mainly in the low 70s. Winter is comming :(

Malibu Rose~

Daisy Wilcox blooms on very open clusters for me. Not the tight ones like others. The New Orleans Red is just a name I gave that one. It's really a generic hot pink (that was marked 'Red') that I picked up on the Waterfront Market in New Orleans for a couple bucks.

The 'Miami Rose' is probably 4 or 5 years old and is very big. I've shared cuttings of it with others in the area already. It is in a (very large) pot.

They all look really great. I already wanted a penang peach now I really want one, lol. My pink didn't bloom this year but the others did well.

Dave- I think as your Daisy gets more established it will pack in the flowers. Mine is loaded with inflos that are like this: bill

Thanks for the pictures--some of the most beautiful I've ever seen!

We have beautiful, old established plumerias in my valley neighborhood. I have a very large plumeria that a grower identified as 'Cinnamon Burgundy.' I bought it at Lowe's about 10 years ago, marked as 'white with yellow.' It puts out masses of beautiful dark red/violet blooms reliably every year.

Everyone wants to hack at my tree and this year I finally put an end to it--not one person that has taken a cutting has had any luck getting the cuttings to take.

I just bought a variety at the LA County Fair marked 'Maui Red'--hopefully it will be a deep red like the cinnamon burgundy.

OK Bill, now how often do you have to water that plant? And does it bloom OK for you in a pot? How often do you have to root prune?

I water it every few days in the summer and root prune it every 5 years. Right now it is covered with bright pink blooms, about 25 inflos. It is a happy camper.
