air layering, what to do next - magnolia tree

Hi,

I need your advice, please. I have a Magnolia tree ( pink/purple flowers, not the white kind ), some people call it the "Tulip tree". I followed the instructions posted on various web sites about air layering. I started the process about 3 months ago. I just checked, and the places that I "air layered" sprouted baby roots already. The roots are about 3 inches long,

they are about as thick as the size of some Phal or Cattleya ( orchids ) roots. The tree will shed its leaves in Nov or December, and go to sleep until Feb, when it will bloom, and

the leaves will come back in late Feb or March. I would like to ask this : should I leave the branches on the mother tree until next Spring, or should I cut them now and put them in their own pots ? This is my first attempt at air layering, so any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. I live in Long Beach, southern CA, about 1 mile from the ocean.

Mike
