Candidates for propagation by root cuttings?

I'm planning to dig up an oriental poppy this week and attempt propagation by root cuttings. Do you have any suggestions on other plants that can be multiplied using this method? Is it best to dig up now or later in the fall?

A little web search suggest the following for root propagation: acanthus, dicentra, echinacea, sea holly, nepeta, phlox, verbascum, and japanese anemone. What's your experience with these, or can you add others to the list? Thanks!

Heliopsis helianthoides and all epimediums are propagated with root cuttings.

Thanks everyone, for chiming in. I love the fact that I now have multiple options, with the ability to even choose all of them, if I want--including "farming out" the job of grafting it, as well as trying my own hand at it. Thanks, again for the great ideas. I never thought of paying someone to do a custom graft, nor buying my own rootstock at a big-box store by just getting a basic tree. Also, if the ancient tree is grafted, I certainly can't see it anywhere on the trunk--and I can usually spot a graft. But this tree is so gnarled that maybe it's long been invisible. But the tree also doesn't sucker. In all the years of living there, I've never seen one. I've found a few small trees nearby that may have come up from seed, and I'm keeping an eye on them, but I honestly can't even tell if they are the same as the Mother Tree. They look somewhat different, and they've neither flowered nor fruited, so maybe there's a cross-pollinator that means the tree doesn't come up true from seed, or maybe they are something else altogether. Whatever the case, I just don't want to say goodbye to this tree forever, so I am glad to have multiple options. The great likelihood is that I'll try several of them, and (If I'm lucky!) wind up with more than one successful clone--not a bad thing at all!!!

Well... Minneola Tangelo on Carrizo, and Clementine on unknown rootstock both DIED. I was extremely disappointed because I thought they were beautifully grafted (lol), everything mated so well and clean. Root system were bushy and healthy. Sadly I think I killed them with too much love (a.k.a. watering them too much). I dug them up and their once healthy roots weren't bushy anymore, but small (shrunk) and limpy. Root rot perhaps. Rio Red on Carrizo by whip grafting was an experiment and new to me. It died too, but I didn't care. It was my first time at whip grafting, and now I know I hate the process. Or maybe I was too ambitious the first time around by trying to mate a bud stick with a root system. LOL. Anyway, one root graft did survived - Okitsu satsuma mandarin on Carrizo. A Carrizo root sucker (left side) decided to show itself as well. I don't know what to do with it yet - let it grow and compete with the Okitsu bud, or just pluck it off now. Or let it grow bigger, then hack it off and graft another variety onto it, thus getting a citrus two headed monster. Suggestion? The life of the Okitsu satsuma mandarin on a cut-off piece of Carrizo root: May 19, 2018: July 10, 2018: July 19, 2018: August 8, 2018: I'm surprised the big leaf didn't fall off yet.

For what it's worth, I have a very large makrut lime that is a rooted from a piece of root that got detached. What happen was, the seedling was in a 1 gallon pot set inside a larger 15 gallon pot. The roots grew through the drainage hole and into the larger pot underneath. When I removed the 1 gallon pot, I had to cut it off and a piece of the root remained in the large pot. It eventually sprouted leaves and is now over 4 ft tall. Has anyone had this happened before?

Brugmansia , I have started two from root prunings when the root ball became too large for the pot....took the really big roots stood them up in a pot and filled in with soil....watered like I do all my brugmansias and lo and behold .....a new plant!

I believe they are done in time for spring growth...late winter to early spring. They can be pushed into early growth in a greenhouse or indoors under strong light.

My experience with oriental poppies is that they make root cuttings themselves; that is to say, they will regrow in the spot from which you removed them, from the root pieces left behind.

Same for japanese anemone and acanthus. It is nearly impossible to move these plants FROM a spot where they've grown.

Update!

My sea holly root cuttings put on leaves in just a couple of weeks. Very impressive. With the oriental poppy, I cut the crown itself into vertical sections and each of those took off.

Karin - I see your point. The spot where I dug out a sea holly now has a new plant in its place. That's a neat trick!

I let this thread hang around to gather some seriousious suggestion before I tossed in my one wild observation.

Perhaps you might try Bougainvillea root cuttings. I had a Bougainvillea in a pot that got surprised by a hard freeze so I tossed it. My spouse retreved it from the dumpster and replanted the root and it grew a new plant.
