Digging up plants - divide now, or later?

I have to dig up a ton of plants from a bed in the ground and pot them. There is no place to transplant them to, and they'll die if I leave them there. Here's the question: should I divide them now, if I am already disturbing them? Or should I disturb them twice and divide them when they're dormant?

P.S. If you're wondering why they'll die, it is fairly difficult to really explain just how bad our binding weed is. I have tried to, and people don't really understand. The top of the bed is a sea of leaves in a lattice-work of binding weeds. You can (quite literally) stick your hand anywhere and grab a handful of leaves, lift them up, and still see more underneath. They are strangling every single flower in a bed 100' X 11'. I have tried to weed them and it takes (again, this is literally, not exaggerating) at least 5 minutes to free one stem from the 10 or more vines it is intertangled with.
