And it works best when done in wet potting mix, not liquids. I have done hundreds of cuttings and never used rotting hormone but it won't hurt anything if you want to use it. Just put them, deep as possible, in potting mix, not liquids. They will root in liquids but then they have to adjust all over again when transplanted to dirt. Dave

My Hawaiian Orange Cherry tomatoes were going crazy and we could not get to the tomatoes to pick them. So I took my scissors to them. I then took the trimmings and saved the suckers...some about a foot long...some with blooms and some with small tomatoes. I stuck them in MG potting soil and kept moist. Today I gave away 20+ tomato plants on FreeCycle (I did not need more of this one). They had rooted very nicely and were growing. I rooted a sucker from my Delicious because worms were a problem when I planted in March; they left me with just 2 Delicious plants. That rooted sucker is in the ground and looking good. Also rooted Green Copia suckers. I have Black Prince suckers in MG now...it has been a great producer this year and tastes so good!

I often just plant "doubles", where two seedlings came up together. Just thin to two. The way it turns out is that the total growth of both plants together is essentially the same as one plant would have been. The final result is pretty much indistinguishable from one plant. Yes, each plant will only grow to half size, but you've got two plants. This is handy insurance in case one plant dies. No gaps. So no, you don't really end up with more independent plants, but you do get that insurance. I've got twelve feet of trellised cherry tomatoes, and they were all planted as doubles. They're growing like crazy and are already four feet high and setting fruit, filling the trellis. They'll eventually spill over the top of my seven foot trellis.
