GASP!! My brand new Seed Pod has fallen off! can I save it??

So I have this Sunset Plumeria that amazingly had started to develop a seed pod (weird!) but it has fallen off and there is no way that this pod was more than 10 dyas old. Have I lost it? Is there anything that I can do to maybe get one or 2 seeds from it?? I could absolutely cry!!

photo below...please help me!

(p.s. that is our resident caterpillar, I moved him to our hibiscus tree-which I hate-so he can eat till his hearts content)

Sorry to say just toss it. There's nothing that can be done with such an immature pod. They take many months to ripen. You'll probably get more pods in the future. BTW pretty caterpillar.

Kryslip= sorry by your seed pod has been rejected and it is finished. There is no way to save it. If it was 9 months old you could let it dry and open but a young one is done. Also, your catapillar like most is specific to one or a few host plants and putting it on another plant will often cause it to die. The mother found the host plant and put the egg on it so it would have that food supply. Most of them do not eat any plant but only specific types. Also why do you hate your hibiscus? whitefly? Get a good quality worm castings and spread around the base and water into the ground. Whitefly hate the taste. Bill

Thank you for your reply. Do you think it would be ok to plant/sow them in a pot or does this need to be in the ground please? ==>>> you have enough seed.. to try a variety of methods ... and i suggest you do so ... when i have no learning curve ... i do .. say.. 10 seeds every way ... and one of the methods usually works.. based on my level of incompetence ... lol .. when you rely on one methods.... one thing wrong.. total fail ... been there.. done that ... so spread the odds ... i bet in ground ... is the easiest.. most forgiving method.. pots in winter.. can be very problematic .. for the newb ..but maybe not.. in your area .... ken

I have a seed pod on my desert rose!!!

Have a question. I have four large desert rose plants. Two of them produced two seed pods two years ago. Last year the same two produced three. This year I just discovered I have two pods on one and eleven (11) on one that has not produced pods before. They have all just started. Is it possible all eleven on the one plant will have viable seeds in each pod. And no I do not grow the for a nursery or anything like that. These are in my back yard. Thanks, Tanya

I usually start my paint choosing by picking up a bunch of paint chips (big chips--not those itty bitty things) and taping them to the wall. I then eliminate the ones I definitely don't like. Then I come back and do the same thing in different light--morning, midday, under artificial light--eliminating a few chips each time. When I've covered the time-of-day bases, I move the chips to another wall and repeat. Usually I can narrow the choices down to just a few, and only then move on to actual paint samples. For my bedroom, I thought I wanted a blue-gray. Went through a lot of chips and ended up not liking any of them. Switched over to gray greens, and that is what I eventually ended up with. I ended up very happy with the color.

Can I bag a whole cage for seed saving?

IMO, you will find the plant outgrowing the cages if you try to bag the whole plant. It is really easy to do, even for bagging just a branch or part of a branch. They grow a lot more than you would think in that short time. If you want tons of pure seed, then I guess bagging a whole plant is a way to do that, but if you just want enough for a couple seasons for yourself and a few others, just bag a couple branches. And if you do just branches, don't skimp on the size of the bag. Make them as big as you think they need to be and then add 50% more size. Bruce

Bill do you think the worm castings will work on hibiscus in a GH over the winter? I don't bother saving my tropical hibiscus just because of the whitefly problem I have when they are in the GH. I have some beautiful varieties that I'd love to keep.

Sorry to say but at such a young age, that seedpod should really be a goner. If it was almost to full size (like 8 months along) I would say you could save it.

As far as that caterpillar...it is a Saddleback Caterpillar. be careful..this one hurts
