I generally leave it on to start with, keeping the bottle in shade or semi-shade, of course; then when i can see roots or new growth I'll start opening the cap for periods (so the atmosphere doesn't suddenly get too dry) and eventually expose the entire plant, i.e., remove the bottle. Gary

I found a few ideas HERE at Apartment Therapy. I've been saving hubby's wine bottles to use for watering plants since I'm terrible at remembering to do so on my own. I don't think you need the Plant Nannies like they show though. I've seen glass bottles used as too, I don't really care for the look. I think it would be fun to make garden lighting with them but I'd first swirl some stained glass looking paint on the inside in the colors of the drinks and then add lights.

The collective knowledge of so many rosarians who garden under such diverse growing conditions and employ so many diverse and ingenious management practices, then shared so unselfishly, is a noble tribute to the much appreciated Roses Forum contributors. I have learned more on this forum than I have through rose books, rose clubs, or local rosarians, save one elderly rosarian, now deceased, who entered my life much too late and left it far too soon. A few years ago, fed up with the mish-mash of various containers which either fell over, didn't fit in the carrying trays, got mangled, squashed or brittle that I ordered 1000 4inch square pots...in fairly rigid plastic. Why did I wait so long? I love it - they fit on my greenhouse bench with no gaps or waste of space, they are durable and washable, they look fantastic - I absolutely feel in charge and each one is filled with exactly one full trowel of potting mix. I also ordered 1000 5inch labels after too many labelling fails. I have been using these pots and labels (I use a chinagraph pencil) for the last 5 seasons and sowing is a joy.
