Sasha, it does have a lot of good roots, all firm, so I guess it's just seeing the size of the ball that scared me. It never even sent roots down into the bottom half of the pot I had it in, so I hope repotting it will change that. Toni, the trees are great, no brown needles, no droopiness, I wanted to repot simply because I knew nothing about plants when I received the NIP, and with no growth, wanted to make sure the roots were okay. TJ, I've wondered about separating the trunks more, and may try to tease the roots apart, but I'll stop before anything rips! Shiver, I think 6" may be the way to go... it was in an 8" when I bought it, and I put it in a 10", so going down to 6" (hopefully I can find one that won't tip!) sounds reasonable. Amccour, I don't know how long the little one had been there, it was hiding in the middle of the other four trees, but it does have its own root system that was just a lot more shallow than the other. It's most likely shock from the root surgery and re-potting that has caused the drooping and discoloration. The largest one probably took the brunt of the damage, so if the others were going to die, I'd expect them to already show symptoms. Just keep them watered deeply and regularly, especially if you're gonna get a freeze. The temps you mentioned should not hurt them. In my experience, Norfolk Pines are usually more hardy than they're given credit for. Just make sure to cover them with a sheet if you're expecting a freeze. It's really just a wait and see at this point. Other than making sure they're well watered and protected from freezing temperatures, there's nothing else to do but hope. They grow well in the Foley Al. area. Isn't that the same plant (tree) that BIG BOX Stores sell, decorated with red ribbons for Christmas Trees? We got ours from them and after Christmas we planted it outside. It was around $20. for a five foot tree, a few years ago, which is a very far cry from $300. for an 8 ft tree. Ours grew much faster and larger then our space allowed, so we had to remove it. It withstood 19 degree weather, one year, with no problem.

Don't plant it within 100 feet of anything you care about. It's not invasive, but they're extremely brittle. One across the street came down in a mild March thunderstorm - not a hurricane - a couple years ago, crushing my boyfriend's car. The storm snapped it off at 10 feet above the ground. The ten-foot stump finally came down in a thunderstorm a few months ago, taking out a neighbor's fence. (these were planted in the right-of-way and the whole neighborhood had to beg the city to take its twin out.) They also tend to get kind of scraggly looking as they get taller. They don't keep that pretty conical shape down here. And because they get so tall, taking one out can require a tree guy with a cherry picker to top it several times in order to get rid of it without endangering nearby houses (had to do that in another house years ago, it's expensive.) I'd advise against anyone down here planting them. I know Geico would.
