Dividing Norfolk Island Pine plant

We have a 4-foot tall Norfolk Island Pine that has two healthy trunks with full branches. The trunks are connected at the soil level. It lives inside but we put it outside when the weather is fine for it. Being in South Carolina that is fairly often. We would like to divide it so we have two single-stemmed plants. Is it alright to divide the roots and, if so, what is the best way to do it?
