Question about a inflo that continues to bloom

Lately I have been asking myself if there is a way to tell from a inflo on how long it has been blooming and growing?

The structure of a inflo is very interesting and if I would have paid attention from the beginning, I might have the answer.

Which I will do on the next one that is developing right now.

Unfortunately I did not take a side shot on how tall the stems with the blooms are getting as they continue to grow.

see the stems on the left...each SECTION, there should have been a bloom. but when do they split again and multiply the stems for blooms again

About 1 1/2 month later and it is still blooming. So is there a way to count on the stems on how long a inflo has been blooming?

Hey Lucy,

PLs let me know if I didn't answer your questions. Not all of the buds on all of the sections will develop into flowers. The variety, age, and treatment of the plant will be factors as to how many branches the inflo produces. Some many,some just a couple. Your inflo will fall off and leave a scar a few weeks after the blooms are spent, and your plumie will branch and not bloom till next year, if you're lucky. LOVE YA!

Lucy, I'm not sure I entirely understand your question. Your inflo has the potential to continue to put out blooms for the rest of the season and maybe even into the Fall.

The inflo structure consists basically of the main inflo stem (sometimes there are more than one), then the peduncles come off of that -- there are usually at least 4 or 5 of these and with really healthy plants, many more. It looks like there are 4 on yours. Then the buds form off the peduncles. The little buds form on pedicels. The pedicel falls off with the bloom when the bloom is old.

The peduncles continue to 'lengthen' as the buds continue to form on their tips. I suppose you can get some idea how old an inflo is by the length of the peduncles. There is no new 'branching' going on; just more buds forming on the already-existing peduncles.

I would think so. In my experience the fans only stop growing when they bloom. If no bloom happens the fan continues to grow as normal. Ever see an old rhizome like a foot long that has been struggling in grass? They continue to grow along each year, never putting out increases or blooming, just growing along... Mike Mike

Congrats on both Grapette and Pink Pansy! It's really hard to put a time frame on the first sighting of an inflo until the first flower but I generally think along the lines of about 6 weeks. Actually, I've never really timed it out but it would be different for each and every plant. Will we get to see pics? :)

How much sun is required for inflos to bloom......

My experience is limited, but I had blooms for the first time this week-end. Our lone plumie got direct sun from around 9am till 4pm. So, about 6 or 7 hours a day for mine to develop the inflo's and bloom. This was the second season we had it. No inflo or blooms last season. We refilled our "patience bucket" a few times, but the wait was worth it.

central_cali, Im also in central Calif. I'm in the San Joaquin Valley, south of Fresno and north of Bakersfield. Sounds like your plant either froze or got too cold.. did the dreaded tip rot, black tip, stem rot... whatever the case, not a good thing. I'd suggest you bring your plant inside this winter. They're hardy but can't tolerate cold wet toes (roots) My lows here are too cold to leave then outside or we get a sneak frost or freeze... sure death. Bring it inside if you haven't already done so. I had to cut off about 2 ft of 1 of my plants.. it branched. They will branch after they bloom, or you cut them. GENERALLY they don't bloom on newly formed tips. That's why multi-tipped plants are good... more tips, more blooms !! A plant from seed could take 3 or more years to bloom, a rooted cutting CAN bloom within months, some have inflos formed and can bloom before they ever root. Just depends. Bring your plant inside for winter !! Good luck Cali~

Ho Bri..thanks You sure are right about that with different plants the size and amount of peduncles are different.

Dave of course you gave me the NAMES I did not know how to call the peduncles where the buds grow on and continue to lengthen. That is what I meant. I really only wanted to find out how much time goes by from one peduncles section to the next.

I am sure now that it is different with each Plant, the weather etc etc.

But as I was watching the peduncles on the other Plumeria got longer and longer...this was just a question that came up.

Lucy, I'm not sure i have all the structures right! It could be the main stem inflo is also called a peduncle and the ones splitting from it are secondary peduncles. Maybe someone more brainy can set me straight!

That is a gorgeous flower by the way. It has no name??

Dave yupp it is the Mystery cutting that Chocolate Brug send me earlier this year.

It is ok for now Dave. At least I know that there are more names to the inflo parts lol
