saving your pepper seeds

hi all -

I know some of you are seed savers, and what I've heard is the mostly the peppers don't cross and you just save a bunch of seeds and you'll get most of them true to form.

Is this an accurate impression? what if they are outside and close in proximity? Would you take some precautions on a pepper or two to save seeds from?

Has anyone deliberately crossed to develop another variety?

Interested in your experiences with your seed saving.
