Well, it's kind of hard to nail it down exactly but I'll hazard a guess it's a Numex Mirasol. I grew it last year.

FYI, there is no "standard" Paprika pepper, there are many different varieties used to make the powder. Some examples include Feherozon, Botinecka Zuta, Soroksari, Kalocsai V-2, Szeged, Papri Paprika and Black Hungarian.

Thanks, Bill! I'm growing Botinecka Zuta, Black Hungarian, Soroksari, and Feherozon, plus Alma Paprika this year, but the peppers on this plant don't look like any of them.

I guess I figured since the package was labeled Hungarian Paprika, that it would be similar to the Boldog Hungarian Paprika that I have.

I just hope it's not too hot! I'm kind of a wimp ... probably shouldn't even be allowed to post on this forum, LOL, but the hottest things I have growing this year are Beaver Dam, Anaheim, Mariachi, and Ancho. Maybe I can mix the powders of a couple of the milder paprika peppers with it to dilute it if necessary.

Bump and a question.

I grew some generic "paprika". They are a rounded bell type fruit. They look like the red ones in this photo: http://www.ashlandinternet.com/~basile/alma.jpg Is it best to cut them up and dry them in a dehydrator? They are very meaty.

I too am attempting to grow Alma Paprika Peppers for the first time. My plants are huge. One of the six plants is more than four feet wide. I have three in pots and three in the ground, and all of them seem to be locked up.

There are hundreds and hundreds of peppers on them, and they are each about the size of a pea. Unfortunately, they have been this exact size for many-many weeks.

We had a cold wet spring, but summer has been normal; warm to hot and dry. I water daily. I am stumped.

I sure don't have an answer on the Alma's not gaining any size. It's August 2nd, and I only have a few green tomatoes about the size of a nickel! Didn't do anything different than previous years, and normally I'm eating fresh, ripe tomatoes by now. Go figure ...

To post pictures, I opened a Photobucket account. Uploaded pictures from my computer, than copied and pasted the HTML code (third choice down under your picture on Photobucket website) into the text of my post. Hope this helps!

Lostyooper, I do exactly as you described - remove stem, cut open, remove seeds, then cut into strips to speed up the drying if the pepper has a thick flesh. If it's thin walled, cutting them in half should be fine.

If you don't have a dehydrator, you can hang them somewhere dry, and out of direct sunlight. Once the peppers are dry, cut the stem off, slice open and remove the seeds. Then, just put in a coffee grinder to turn into paprika powder.

I just used up the last of mine from last year, so I am anxious for mine to ripen!

BTW, still waiting on the mystery peppers to ripen, so I can taste them.

Hey Thanks. I have decided to just pull five of the six plants and toss them into my compost pile. I cut all the peppers (peas) off of the sixth plant, which is growing in a pot on the deck. I want to see if perhaps the peppers will grow back 'normally'.

Hmmm ... I'm no pepper expert, but what I think you've got there is a case of mistaken identity.

I've grown Alma Paprika for three years, and it doesn't look anything like the plant in your pictures.

The fruit is not grown in clusters towards the ends of branches. It grows closer to the main stem, because the fruits get so heavy.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than myself can identify it for you. If no one responds on this thread, you might want to start a new thread with those pictures. By the way, great job posting photos!

What you have there is not even a species of pepper! Looks like Garden Huckleberry or something closely related (Solanum sp). They ripen to a dark blue/black. I have no experience with them though.

You know, I wondered about the wrong seeds being sent to me from Reimers. I have looked at photos of Paprikas on line and saw that they looked nothing like my pea sized fruit.

I also ordered garden huckleberry seeds from Reimers, and they are doing fine. My huckleberry plants are loaded with fruit. If the mystery plant is a garden huckleberry plant, it isn't the same variety.

I ordered both hot and sweet paprika pepper seeds, and the seeds in each of these packages produced the mystery plant with the tiny fruit. They are some kind of pepper, they are hot and spicy to the taste.
