Best way to overwinter 1st year plum. seedlings

OK, I've got a number of nice plumeria seedlings that are about 6" high. What is the best way to overwinter them? I don't have a greenhouse unfortunately. I will assume a bright window or under lights since these will not go dormant? Keep unformly moist but not too wet? Use systemics for potential mite infestation? What about ideal temperature (hi/low)?

Hey Dave, I know your a lot more colder up there than we are down here but all I did was keep them inside in a bright window. long as they stay warm. They should be ok. You know to keep watering them like you have till their second spring. I'm sure there are some people here from that area that can give you better input as far as having to use lights.

Dave this will be my first year growing plumeria seedlings inside too. Thankfully I have a greenhouse that we keep heated to around 70 during the winter. I have supplemental lighting but don't know if I'll need it for the plumeria or not. I'll put some under the lights and others in natural light and see what happens. My only concern is that they might stay too moist. I have fans for air circulation but everything always seems kind of damp in the GH during the winter, even if I cut down on watering. Inside my house is completely opposite. The heat makes everything so dry and I always have problems with spider mites because of it. Besides that, between the animals and kids, potted plants don't last long inside my house! I'll be interested to see what responses you get to this question.

I was browsing the internet for reviews and/or comments about Wild Swan and this thread came up. So I'll ask here. I planted mine in the Spring of 2015 and still no blooms. The foliage seems healthy, hasn't wilted despite this past hot summer, but not as full as I see in photos posted here. There is even new growth coming from the center. However, no blooms. It is in semi shade until 2pm. and then gets full sun for several hours. Good soil with leaf mulch. I'm wondering if I should move it and try again somewhere else, but I'd hate to lose it altogether. I don't even think nurseries here are carrying it anymore, perhaps other gardeners did not have success with it here in NE Ohio.

Your roses are beautiful! They were bare root and they've grown that big in one summer? Wow, you must have the magic touch. I got two Fantin Latours (potted) from Heirloom Roses this spring and they've grown about two feet tall, but they're branching out pretty well. I like the way you've put your roses out so that they will be easy to see and smell when they start blooming. You picked roses that should stand up to some tough winters. Even with all the snow, they should be fine (we get two to three feet a year lately) but I have read that in the first year, Gallicas, Albas and most old-fashioned roses could use some winter protection. You might want to check the Heirloom Roses website. They have an e-mail where you can send questions. They've always been good about answering my questions, even before I purchased any of their roses. Good luck with the winter!

Pat normally they do not stand up. But I am sure it will still lower the buds lol But that IS what drew my attention to them. Brenda thanks now you really got me on the edge lol I do have a cross from you growing too, but poor baby was planted in the wrong place this year :-( Eloise sure...just read the above paragraph rofl. The biggest make or break provider when growing out of zone is your micro climate. It can vary one zone up/down in your own yard. If you don't have that area that provides the extra covering protection then sooner or later your conifer will perish. A micro climate is simply the local climate on a small scale. Micro climates are formed by hills and valleys, structures, paved areas, hedges, etc. These features may change airflow patterns, alter day length or light intensities, trap heat during the day and slowly release it during the night, or in other ways modify local climate. These 3 things need to be considered when growing plants adapted to a hardness zone warmer then your own. Location: Planting your warm-climate plants in a sunny, south-facing location against a fence or sun drenched wall will counteract the effects of shorter days and cold north winds. Shelter: Taking the time to tuck your plants in close proximity to a wind break screen again facing south is help full Mulch: A thick layer of dark-colored mulch keeps frost out of the ground and allows the soil to warm up earlier in the spring. Forget the overwintering for the first few years. That won't get it. Only providing the above mentioned protections on a permanent basis will insure a better then average survival rate when growing out of zone. Dave

Thanks all. I have a high-intensity grow light in the basement (but space is limited!). And several sunny windows. The basement location is around 60 degrees F in the winter. Upstairs near the windows it is warmer. I will likely resort to systemics for mites.
