How do I start a new plant of Fatsia Japonica?

I have this plant on one side of my house. I would love to start a new one for the other side. What is the best way to do this. Cuttings? Now, or am I too late? Thanks a lot

Can take a cutting anytime use firm new growth or semi-hard wood. apply 0.1% IBA stick in well drained soil & mist, & use bottom heat. takes 25-50 days to root.
Can also use root cuttings and/or air layering.

I have had success with taking heel cuttings w/.1% IBA.
Take an entire leaf, with it's stem and a small portion of the main stalk still attached, dip it in the hormone solution and stick it in a 50/50 mix of peat & perlite w/bottom heat. Tent it with a baggie and rubber band to keep the humidity up.

ok, I'm in too! :) I've been reading alot about this topic for years when it's time to go out and buy those expensive looking planters. I just went to my local (high end) garden supply and found that a big bale of peat moss was around $15 and a small bag of vermiculite was around $6. I thought I'd just go to Walmart and check it out. The weather is looking good for this weekend (finally!) and I'm gonna go 'tufa'.

I don't know where you live but in most of the UK you can grow this outdoors in the ground. They are very forgiving, easy to grow and pretty hard to kill. I do not believe it is any thing like doomed. It looks as if it has been overwatered and underlit, that's all. If you can give me a rough idea of where you live I can tell you if it can go in the ground. If you live somewhere with really chilly winters I'd repot into a nice big container with new container compost. Hold back on the watering. Keep it in the garden until there have been a few frosts before bringing it into the lightest coolest place you have inside. Here is a link that might be useful: Fatsia japonica

I have had 2 fatsia japonicas for 5 years. They are wonderful plants and seem to be very hardy. They have made it through several freezes each winter (as low as 15 degrees a couple of times) and sometimes look pretty sad by spring. But they always come back stronger than before. The only pruning I do is pull off yellow leaves after new growth appears. I wouldn't cut off anything until you see new growth. They usually begin putting on new growth in April. If you haven't seen signs of life by June I would suspect they aren't coming back. But it couldn't hurt to wait another week or so to see if warm weather encourages new growth.

Thank you both for your input! Johnnieb, like you I was impatient for having this lovely plant, so did indeed get a second one and planted it within 4 feet of the original site. So I have one that's thriving beautifully; just was hoping greedily maybe to have two in the area; I may take your advice on the replant, though--they are so neat. My neighbor's puts out seeds and sprouts babies--she turned me onto how easy they can be here, so I have a 2 inch tall baby I've maintained through the winter and will definitely plant that one on the other side of my walk way...or maybe a bigger one....wonder how fast they grow?Thanks also Barrie; we're in coastal Carolina, and admiring my neighbor's healthy plant sparked my interest, so fatsias do thrive here; I probably mispoke on the size of the pot-probably 3 gallons in actuality. Sometimes you can actually divide a larger plant by slicing a stem off below ground level and separating it with roots already attached - that would be the best way to come up with a matching plant for the one you have, if it's possible. They're also easy from seed if your plant forms clusters of black berries at the end of winter, but those plants would be a long time in catching up to your original.
