Wal-Mart to spend 35 million on habitat restoration.
Comments (22)For the most part, the WalMart that came to our town has been good for the other small stores. With the distances people have to drive to do large scale shopping around here, often in excess of 50 to 100 miles, having a large store like WalMart offers an incentive for many people to come here instead of driving a little further to a much larger town. Without WalMart, many of our other small stores would probably already be out of business, even if some of them don't realize it. Also, before Canada enacted their protectionist taxes, up to as much as 14% I believe, on materials purchased in the USA and taken across the border, many Canadians also came here to shop because we had more variety here. Much lower prices on cigarettes and alcohol as well. Now they stay home rather than being punished for looking for a better price on things they want. However, I have also seen that much of their home town rhetoric is just that, rhetoric. We don't seem to get much cooperation from WalMart when looking for assistance in local charity activities. While those demonized oil companies and related industries, like Halliburton, freely donate thousands of dollars per year to local charity causes, WalMart seems hard pressed to offer a toaster as a donation....See MoreWorst Arbor Day winner - ever!
Comments (3)I agree Ziggy that engineering wetlands from scratch is tricky anyway without the added burden of trying to relocate mature trees. I'm guessing that politics had something to do with the effort to focus on relocating the actual trees rather than using more viable seedlings and saplings. Supposedly, Wall-Mart had to compensate for the loss of mature trees and not just the area of lost wetlands but perhaps that could have been accomplished by expanding the size of the restored wetland or including some component in the mitigation plan for longterm conservation of existing wetlands. I worked with the Corps for a few years doing environmental work and agree with your assessment that the Corps has accounted for more wetland loss despite a small few worthy efforts like the Everglades restoration. My experience was that Gov't agencies like the Corps take their lead from the White House Executive Office who have the power of appointment and policy committment to steer agencies fairly widely within the broad mission jurisdiction. I was in the private sector consulting with the Corps during the Reagan years when the Corps considered their environmental responsibilities to be elective - they were after all part of the DOD (Dept of Defense) though a civilian part. I was told many times by COE officials of my mitigation recommendations that I should be careful not to call for too much environmental adherence or the Corps would simply choose not to follow them. Later when I worked with the Corps as an employee during a more environmentally conscious administration, more (some) emphasis was given to environmentally friendly solutions when possible including avoidance and restoration as well as flood control that used natural principals (in addition to and often instead of engineered ones). There was also a more open planning process with public hearings and serious input from stakeholders. I hear now that under the new admin, all my friends in the Environmental Division either left or are hanging on and trying to wait it out. They don't get funded, they don't get to hire replacements, their managers are not scientists, their recommendations are ignored, they don't get invited to meetings that are now run by the engineer planners. So anyway, sorry you are unemployed. Maybe in the next administration, we'll see more emphasis on environmental management again....See MoreNobel economics prize winner says US Auto industry will disappear
Comments (7)I watched as the steel industry left. Although I live in Texas, the importation of Japanese steel and the serious cutting back at the steel plant, sent shockwaves for many, many miles. I don't understand why people don't care. I do know when I have discussed such things, there are always some who are ready to be a little happy because all the 'union thugs' lost their jobs. They don't seem to realize those people were paying taxes, buying things, raising children, supporting the community. Many of them became 'users' of fhe system rather than contributors. Many people tout Wal Mart and imports as a good thing, but I don't believe they are looking at the big picture. The true cost of cheap goods is not reflected at the cash register - there are many hidden costs....See MoreWow, I just won a $1000 WalMart gift certificate
Comments (14)One time I got a book in the mail. It was called Shabby Chic and I didn't remember ordering it, but thought maybe I did, because I like that sort of thing. Opened it up and there was a card in it....I had gone to a country decorating magazine site...one of the first things I had ever done when I got webtv, and entered a sweepstakes, and actually won. So, at least that was a legitimate prize. I think it was just about the only thing I have ever won tho....See Moreviola8
