Having trouble with soft-stemmed cuttings

This is probably a well-worn topic, but bear with me...

For some reason, I've never had much luck with simple propagation of soft-stemmed cuttings (pothos vine, etc). A lot of people say, "just make a clean, biased cut and stick the cutting's end down into the potting soil, make sure it doesn't dry out in that portion of the pot's soil, be patient, and... voila!" But it has worked out successfully for me in only a smallish minority of attempts.

I've also tried putting a cutting into a jar of water, waiting till roolets appear, then putting the stem into soil. Not too much success with that, too. A lotof them have shriveled.

I should mention, I don't seem to have a "brown thumb" when it comes to vegetable growing, nor to fruits, shrubs, trees, or outdoor vines.

So, I'm suspecting my technique orapproach. Actually, I'm wondering about using rooting hormone. What should I buy for soft-stemmed cuttings? Hormone 'strength rating'? Any advice will be gladly received.
