Disapointed with Pepper Joe peppers

First they don't look anything like the picture/description

"Beautiful 3" Hot Peppers grow in large clumps facing skyward. Very tasty and great for drying"

They grow down and not in clumps. They don't taste that good nor hardly have any heat. More heat when still small, but less if left to grow to full size.

The Barney look more like cherry peppers than his description as well... (5 to 6" long) my foot.

Can't say anything about the Golden Hab's quality just yet...

Hi Vera,

PepperJoe is notorious for re-naming his peppers and selling them for a higher price. I wasn't that happy with a few that I grew from him, but I will say this about his Golden Habanero:

he's not kidding when he says that the sucker is HOT!

I mean it's brutally hot, nuclear hot, much hotter than a Chocolate Habanero.

Shockingly hot.

The thing nearly chased my Trinidad Scorpion out of the garden.

You get the picture.

It is also a very large, prolific and beautiful plant/pod. Easy to become a favorite if you love pain or don't like your neighbors, etc.
Enjoy the growing season, and next year try a few of these suppliers if you haven't already, they are also very good with great prices/service.

In my experience, his product has a bit too much "genetic diversity" for a legitimate seed company. I got roughly 20% crosses from his seed.

Love the Barney pepper, though...but Chimayo looks just like it so far...

in addition to the sites above, also give seedsavers.org a try.

I've also had good luck with Totally Tomato and Gurney pepper seed.

"Dulcetta" is a mixed seed of those sold by Redwood Seeds (and similar distributed companies). The "Yummy" pepper is also similar, but only in orange. It's not the same, but the "Lipstick" is a very sweet red pepper. There's also "Crunch Sweet Orange" bred by me, but I only have a small amount of seed left from an offer that's ended. If you (or anyone, quickly before I run out) check out the 'hot pepper' forum there's a seed offer for-SASE for them. I can send you 4-6 seeds of that if you want. The offspring comes true to type so you can save the seed for the following season.

I believe I have two things you might be interested in. I have Joe E. Parker Pepper (not an heirloom) and Cherokee Purple Tomato (heirloom). Seems like those at Pepper Joe have not changed. I ordered a pack of red Carolina Reapers, planted all the seeds, plants germinated very quickly and plants are doing just fine. However all the peppers are yellow, do not look like reapers at all, certainly not spicey at all and I think it is just a scam. I can literarily snack on the yellow "whatever" pepper they sold me without feeling any heat. In the meantime I ordered directly from the man himself Ed Currie on https://puckerbuttpeppercompany.com and have been growing some real reapers.

Thanks!! Putting them in my bookmarks right now!!

I am growing 3 plants of the Golden Habanero, but unlike another hab I've grown these guys don't seem to appreciate full sun ...leaf margins crinkle and burn. They are doing much better with sun until 2pm :D

Actually the foliage of the Pueblo, 3 of which are variegated I might try to winter. Leaves really remind me of my variegated pequin.

Vera, by the way, I looked something up for you-this should give you an idea of how much he changes the names of things and overcharges. I would try next year from Seed Savers if you want that pepper (from a reliable and less expensive source).
