My first successful rooting of a cutting!

I am so excited because this is my first successful rooting. I guess the third is the charm. My first one from Hawaii a couple of years ago developed root rot because I watered it every day! That was before I discovered this forum and the cutting came without directions! The second cutting from April 07 is still trying to form tiny claws and forever taking its sweet time and at this rate I don't know if it ever will root. But this little one that I purchased in Maui of last August is finally forming leaves! The flowers are supposed to be pink.

Looks good Lou! I've got several that I started about 4 weeks ago. I'll pot them tomorrow and upload some photos too. I made my potting soil a few hours ago and since dinner was ready, I decided to come out of the garage and eat dinner with the family. I'm trying a new potting mixture this year after reading Al's comment on soil. I had a mixture of vermiculite and perlite so I added new zealand moss and chopped it up in about 1 inch strips. Right now I got the mixture soaking in some mosquito dunk water. Tomorrow morning I'll repot my cutting and keep them indoors till Spring. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. cheers, Dennis

I agree with jperilloux, just because your cutting has a few leaves doesn't mean it's fully rooted. I had a Maui Beauty that I took out of my pot because it was wrinkled an I couldn't save it, it had several leaves (maybe 5+ on each branch) an it didn't hardly have any roots at all. My Bill Moragne cutting that I planted back in April has 5+ 6-7 inche leaves, but yet it's roots are starting to grow, they're small, no way near a full root ball. Also if you took it out of the pot, you could disturb the tiny fragile young roots. On plumeria101 site, it says it takes about 90 days (3 months) to form a full root ball. Since you just got yours June 5th, they have only been rooting over a month, if you think they need watering or if the dirt is dry, mist the top of the cuttings or water around the rim of the pot sparingly.

Last year was my first full-born effort at rooting (after 2 years of experimenting), and I had really good success. Took 450 cuttings, and I now have 410 rooted roses. I am using coir medium along with a cheap HD timer and some misters I got off of EBAY. I bought a cheap plastic shelf system from Target, and placed the cuttings on the shelf. Misters are tied up to the shelving and ran from 8:00 am to about 7:00 pm, on 2 minutes off 10. I also have about 50 rooted cuttings in the basement right now from cuttings I received from Univ Cal-Davis on 11/4/05. I am using a "bastardized" version of the process George Mander has explained numerous times here. Biggest difference is I again am using coir. I can't tell you the best things to do in YOUR climate, but here, I would let them develop their foliage a bit, then carefully remove them from the baggies, and very carefully attempt to tip them from their pots. You can safely do this if you can keep the soil balls intact. You might see roots in the balls. If you do, they can be transplanted to larger pots, probably all together, and allowed to continue developing. Right now, they are used to the greenhouse like conditions in the baggies. If you know they have roots, you can begin hardening them off to the harsher elements outside the baggies. Gradually open the baggies to let them acclimate to the drier, colder air so the foliage isn't burned off them by the sudden shock. Once they are used to the conditions outside the bag, they can be safely removed and planted in the larger pots to grow on until you are ready to separate them into individual pots. If they're already individually planted, great! Carefully check for the roots in the soil balls so you'll know whether you can begin hardening them off. If there are roots, go for it. If not, close the bags and wait. Once they begin growing, if there are no roots, I've never succeeded in salvaging them. The cuttings have what they need to grow, not to callus and root. After you've hardened them off and can remove them from their baggies, allowing them to grow on together (presuming they're planted several to each pot), wait until the worst of your winter weather is finished to separate them from each other. You want them as dormant as possible before disturbing their roots. If they have roots and removal and separation can be done before a long rain, that's the best time. Rain, not a hard gully washed, but a gentler longer rain, can make up for a multitude of sins. That steady, gentle bath of rain will prevent the plants from drying out; it can help the foliage and new growth harden off without collapsing; and can settle the soil around the new, softer roots perfectly. Yes, you are going to be a "Plumie Mommie". Your plant is definately growing leaves. Congratulations..Wait..don't water center yet, let the leaves open up....keep center dry..can water around edges of the pot...let the leaves get larger before you water..4" to 6". then you have a plant

Way to go Rose. Keep misting until leaves open down and reach about 6". You can run your finger around the inside of the pot edge and make a little moat. Put some water with B-1 in the moat being careful that the center soil remains dry. When your leaves reach size, drench the whole pot with a mix of B-1 and a half dose of fertilizer (20-20-20 is a good start then reduce the nitrogen after the first year) I do not recommend Miracle grow for plumerias and prefer the Growmore at Armstrongs or Liquinox if you can find it. Growmore has a balanced fertilizer and a high phosphorus Tropical Blend which is and easy to find in Cal. The Liquinox is very good but harder to find. The jury is still out on high phosphorus but the lower nitrogen is helpful in keeping plants from growing too tall. Fertilize a full dose every 14-21 days into early September and then stop fert. Bill, thanks for the valuable tip. Question: I don't have 20-20-20 so may I use 1/2 dose of fish fertilizer after the plant develops the 6" leaves? What do you mean reduce the nitrogen? As for a later fertilizer, may I use Grow More's Hawaiian Bud & Bloom (5-50-17) that I purchased at the San Diego Plumeria sale last year?

The Hawaiian blend is very good for plumerias and is easy to find. They should have a 20-20-20 blend too from Growmore. Reducing the nitrogen is using a fertilizer like the Hawaiian which has the first number (nitrogen) at only 5 which is less than 20. I really think plumerias will take a wide variety of fertilizers and grow big and happy. Many people have only MG around which is very bad for soil after several years. There are some weaknesses with growmore but for the average grower it is a good product and easy to use. You have to have a substantial collection and time to get into injectors or mixing up trash can loads for a siphon sprayer. For you Rose, you can just use you Hawaiian blend period. I only like an even blend in the first two year to get the plant up to size and then I concern myself with flowers. I have used the growmore products for years and my plants look fine. I am sure for every comment I make there are opposing views which are probably very valid. I think I am just a bit lazy and not willing to change my whole system. Bill
