Bluebonnets Overwhelmed by Grass

Nancy Barginear

What can I do about our bluebonnets being overwhelmed by native grass? We have a large wildflower meadow, but the grass has wiped out some of our wildflowers. When the bluebonnets are in full bloom, the grass grows so fast and tall that it overshadows the flowers.

Should I do a controlled burn? Would that destroy the bluebonnet seeds? Is there an herbicide that is specific for grass, yet won't be harmful to wildflowers?

Until the grass took over, our front yard looked like an impressionist painting -- pink evening primrose and yellow dandelions intermingled with the bluebonnets, and accents of Indian paintbrush and Shasta daisies here and there. The grass has completely wiped out our black-eyed susans, winecups, Indian blankets and cosmos.
