pics, recipes, garden secrets.......

Seems only a few of us are posting stuff here but I know there are others out there who like to have fun with thier veggies and flowers.

After all, I think that is what the potager is all about; making your garden a place that produces and provides a little beauty at the same time.

Please share your garden secrets, recipes and pics. Stories are good too.

For example - I have just been named the 'Squash Fairy' in our little neighborhood. It seems that the 'Squash Fairy' shows up in the middle of the night and leaves buckets of squash on peoples doorsteps.

I got 2 new cards! Keiki (Robin) sent 3 varieties: - Red Sugar Apple (OMG - I have NEVER heard of these. I looked them up and am BEYOND excited to start them. They look SO COOL!!! I am so, so so grateful for these!!!) - Clitoria ternatea - blue pea vine (These have been on my want list for some time, and now I finally have them!!! The flowers are really bizarre. I can't wait!!) - Salvia coccinea - pink (have never tried this variety of salvia before!!!) Thank you SO MUCH keiki! These are REALLY cool - it's almost like you knew EXACTLY what I'd love!! Thanks so much for the thoughtfulness. I am so happy to hear that the peppers are producing well already! It made me smile when I read that. Apparently they are perennials in your state, so that's pretty awesome! :) Neohippie sent a card with an adorable bat on the front! How did you know I loved bats so much?? I can see him smiling at me out of the corner of my eye while I type out this thank you :) She sent 4 varieties of seeds: - Ornamental Eggplant 'Pumpkin on a Stick' (I have ALWAYS wanted to try this variety! These are hard to find in stores. I can't wait to see what they look like in person!) - Eggplant 'Black Beauty' (For some reason, the black beauty seeds that I bought came out looking like oriental eggplants, so I am happy that I have some fresh seeds to try again!) - Collards 'Vates' (YES! I do not have this variety - super excited!) - Tomato 'Hawkins Plum' (Don't have this variety either - sounds delicious!!!) Thank you for being so awesome! I will start all of the seeds this spring and will continue to save seeds from them forever! :) Thank you both so much for sending these wonderful seeds :) I love them all!

I have a friend in my neighborhood that grows this rose. It seemed to do well last summer, but I'll ask her specifically about the heat. If I remember correctly, it was short and bushy and seemed to be a vigorous grower. What I remember the most about the rose were its pointed petals. The stripes were very pretty and the bees loved the pollen. Update: My friend says she has Secret Recipe in a sunny location in her garden (zone 9b). I'll make sure to take some photographs this spring.

Thanks again. Yes, both the faux sandstone block wall and the two side natural rock walls are dry stacked. Once you've laid a good foundation of gravel and sand, it's just a matter of putting the pieces together - like a puzzle. And plenty of grunting and sweating, and a cuss word now and then. I should have put another lion at the other end of the bench in place of the flat rock (it's not round, just an optical illusion in the photo), but at the time I was thinking more of a place to sit and reflect with a cup of something. The end of it sure does look like a face tho doesn't it? Also had the idea when I first built the back wall to place something ontop of it, similar to what you see making up the decoration on the back of the bench. Not all the way across the top of the wall, just in the middle; but then decided it might make the whole thing too busy. I like the way the spirea branches eventually will drip down over it.

Gurley, your gardens look so lush! What variety of zucc/squash do you grow? Wondering if there is a variety that doesn't get large, for my small potager? Wish we had a Squash Fairy here.

It is such a pleasure having a potager cottage garden with aromatic edibles at ones fingertips, isn't it!. A feast for the senses as well as the stomach! Wish I had started potager gardening years ago...

As far as recipes go, well, I've been collecting them since I was a little girl. My late father started me on this hobby. He enjoyed fine foods; we clipped gourmet recipes from Life Magazine (if I remember the title of the publication correctly). But he would rather take the family out for a gourmet dinner than cook one, lol. He was a wonderful baker (and so was my German grandmother---Mom was a pretty good cook, but little baking for her). I was often underfoot in the kitchen and learned alot especially of the 'old ways'.

Potager type recipes in my collection include Zucchini Crescent Pie, Zucchini Gremolata, & Chocolate Zucchini Cake. There are also recipes for Lavender Lemonade, Rose Geranium Bread, Strawberry Bread, etc. The list goes on and on.

Wow, your garden has progressed from some of the early photos I saw. Looks lovely! What a treat! Inspirational, as I am attempting a circular potager too.

I can't believe how your garden has grown. Our squash went in ...ummmm, yesterday. I live through yours!!

DD brought a summer recipe to a family get together. Watermelon and cantalope marinated in margaritas. OMG! Sooo delicious I couldn't keep away from them. And so darn potent. Too much would find me under one of your squash leaves "sleeping it off". DD left a ziploc bag of them here and said when the fruit was gone I should pour the "juice" in a glass and drink it.
Warning: This recipe interferes with gardening in straight lines and shifting brain into gear.
