Strange addendum... what is it??

Hello plumie fans,

Since plumeria fever has caught me only recently... I need some help from the experts among you!

(I hope you can see the picture, if not please use the link)

Can anyone tell me what this 'little finger' on my plumeria leaf/branch is?? And what is its use???

I can see it on one leaf only and it has this 'finger' on the leafbranch on two sides.... It measures about 1,5 cm.

I hope it's not a bad sign. Maybe it is quite normal, but I haven't seen it before.

I must admit, however, that this is the first time that I stick my nose into my plumeria about every other hour because it is about to bloom for me for the first time!!!!

Please enlighten me!

Its hard to say without a photo, but your description sounds like a possible seedpod?!? Maybe if you can try posting the photo again....

Trying to get Mrs. No to participate too, but all she has agreed to is to take the Ball Room Dancing classes with me. Sigh. Now that I have learned that I can say No and she won't hate me, it is easier (not that it has ever been difficult). Would not trade the experience of her 'unconditional' for anything. Aw shucks Martie, what a cute little thing ! We also had a Boo, who we lost last year, he was over 15 as I recall. He was a feral cat found by my DH in the vineyard , and was brought home in his shirt pocket. We named him Boo because the vet estimated his birthdate to be Halloween. Hi Flora and WW I looked at the plant more closely today and only this one had this strange head. There were a few other plants scattered about in the vicinity which have the same habit, leaf type etc. and all of those look normal like any other Compositae member. I have two sp. of Silphium in my backyard and this one doesn't resemble them. I read up about fasciation and by all accounts that is what it looks like. Would you know if that is a heritable trait among the Compositae? If so, I will collect the seeds. It sure looks neat. Thanks! Gopal

I did the same thing a few weeks back and unearthed 6 baby black snakes within 6 days or so of each other, all in the same area. Found 1 the first day, 4 a few days later, then a straggler a couple of days after that. I find baby black snakes every year this time in Spring, always concentrated like that. They were all within a 3 feet span of mulch. They were hiding in a particular deep area of mulch that I pulled some english ivy out of (finally rid of the stuff!) after a week or so of rain. It was the last of the ivy that was wrapped into the base roots of a tree that I couldn't pull out last year. When I spread the mulch out evenly when I finished, there they were. I wasn't quite as forgiving as you, though. I say, get 'em when they're slow! Black snakes, are, of course, beneficial, but I don't want them to outnumber our family members, either, so I keep the population trimmed down a bit! Just enough to keep the poisonous ones from nosing around. It's not unearthing snakes that gets me every year, it's the spiders that start scurrying around....ICK! I really hate those guys :( A garden without spiders sounds like heaven to me.

I was able to link the pic. I think it's just a varient. Sometime leaves are malformed or have extra pieces and that's all it appears to be. I wouldn't worry about it.

A seedpod would be a miracle indeed, since it hasn't bloomed!!!! so that is definately not what it is.
I'm curious if Karyn is right, that it may be a varient??

I'm not sure yet which variety my plumeria is;
I literally found my cuttings in northern India. Someone trimmed their tree and threw all the cuttings on the street!!! A pile about 1 meter high!!! Can you imagine my reaction?? I got my Swiss knife and started cutting off everything I could use... in the dirt... in the heat... Soon several people stopped to see what that crazy tourist was doing... They had no clue because plumeria is not very appreciated nor cultivated in that particular region.

Maybe someone can insert the photo into the message for me?? What did I do wrong??? Was the picture still too big?

I hope some more experts will look at it and give their opinion??

Haha i see you examine your plumerias just as closely as I do. It looks like just a malformation, but I am no expert at all. Just an opinion!

Looks as though you have the same thing going on with your plumie that I had last season, and this one too by the looks of things. Here's a pic of Celadine last year with a strange leaf appendage growing from the leaf margin....lo and behold it's doing the same again this year. Don't *think* its anything to worry about....although I do have a prob with this particular plant again (no growth, as in 2007) so will post about that separately.

Thank you Gill for your info and photo... Yes, your plumie also has an addendum but yours clearly is an extra leaf. Mine doesn't look like that at all (yet?). I'll just wait n see. You live in UK?? maybe its the instable weather?? cause I live "nextdoor" in Holland....

Today I made some new pics of the "addendum". (And YeY I can actually see it on the forum now!!!!!!!!!)

Both tentacles have grown to about 2cm (0,8 inch) and I would really like to know if some else has seen this before. Looks different from Gills plumie.
It seems that a leaf on my other cutting is starting to grow them also (from same mother tree).
They do look as if they would have some kind of purpose...

Martina....Well what do you know, I was checking my seedlings the other day and look what I found!!! My little alien growth is complete with two antenna!!! Can you beat that??

Hi Gil,
I love your alien..wonderful. I just think Celadine need warm sunshine outside to grow..You are doing your best. Mine...The roots died, froze and died..So..cut back to finally good white tissue. So a 4' plant is now two cuttings, starting over, breaks my heart. But we both will get there with a bloom or blooms!!!! Next year for me.

Brighty Karen and Karyn, hi there. Errrr, yes it has been altered, slightly, but I only added the green eyes and smiley mouth when I was playing around with one of the photo editing packages I use!! The growth itself it not touched up at all, it too reminded me of a snail......and we have plenty of real ones in the garden too!

I too have a strange addendum growing from one of my plumerias. Here's what is funny, the plant has three branches, and below the tip of each branch has an identical one of these growing from just above a leaf stem.
