SCPS plant sale Sept 9th & 10th

I see that the Southern California Plumeria Society is having their annual Plumeria plant sale on Sept 9th & 10th in San Diego. Does anyone have experience with one of the SCPS sales? Is there a bunch of plantsfor sale? (the website says they had 1500 plants last year, but also refers to event as a plant "show/sale") Is it a swap meet type setting where indiviuals are selling their own goods or is it the SCPS presiding over all sales? Is the pricing competitive? It sure sounds like a fun little trip down to SD. It would be about 200 mile round trip drive for me and if I decide I want to attend I need to start working on the wife now to get permission in time to go and spend some loot...

Hi Dave,
I haven't been to the SCPS plant sale, but in April they had their cutting sale which I did go to. I bought 9 cuttings, gave 2 away, rooted the rest and all but one are doing fine. They were very helpful with advice for a first time buyer. You should definately try to make the trip. Plumerias and a day at Balboa Park...what could be better!!

Just a reminder that the Georgia Native Plant Society's annual plant sale will be this Saturday in Marietta from 10 am to 2 pm. McFarlane Nature Park 280 Farm Road SE Marietta, GA 30067 We haven't had the sale for 2 years due to the drought, so we are pulling out all the stops to have a huge sale. Trees, shrubs, perennials, ferns, bog plants - all native. Plants were rescued from construction sites, donated by nurseries and members, grown from seed and some were even purchased just for this sale (several hundred native azaleas, for example). We'll have extra people on hand to help answer questions and give suggestions. Have a mystery native plant? Bring a piece and we'll try to identify it. I'll be hanging out in the tree/shrub area - stop by and say hi.

I couldn't compare prices, as the plant material I bought was so unlike anything I've seen in any of the "big box" stores, or even my local nurseries, for that matter. I did feel, however, that the prices were reasonable and the plant material very healthy and of good size. Most of the volunteers working the sale were very knowledgeable, but those who could not answer my questions sought out someone who could. One tip: Last year I saw one woman had brought along Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials; I intend to do that myself this year. Sun plants are laid out in the sun, and shade plants arranged under the trees, so it's not only clear what a plant's light requirements are, but how they'll look in that environment. Be prepared for a long walk from the parking to the plants; although they do have a holding area for your plants and you can bring your car up to load it. If you have time, you may want to stroll through some of the gardens there. I got lots of inspiration for my shaded areas in the Sun and Shade Garden. They usually have another event and sale at the Display Gardens in July, I believe. I really appreciate you post. Why is that there are two or more events? Is this similar to Rutgers day which was held during April 25th weekend? I don't know, I just posted the craigslist ad. I got a few good bedding plants last year, they had a good selection including Wave Petunias, and a perennial Campanula. I tried planting a Chrysanthemum in the ground and it did poorly compared with ones I bought before and kept in pots. The Chrysanthemum society usually has lots of plants, and the Daylily club is digging their plants from the garden at the extension center to sell, as well as members bringing some.

I have been to many of the SCPS sales along with the ones in Houston. SCPS Sept sale is for rooted plants only. You will find a great selection of rooted plumies alot blooming. The thing you will find at the SCPS sale is alot of the CALIF seed grown varities from Ken Ames and the Hertzogs like Cobra, Joy, San Diego Sunset, etc. Ken Ames often sales a big rooted ACW and or SCP for great prices.

The SCPS sale is located in beautiful San Diego, in Balboa park. You should make a day of it, I always do. There is a 4/5 star resturant located in the park which is a must eat at place, beautiful building, location, delicious food, called the Prado resturant. The combination of things makes the SCPS a must attend event even if you do not buy anything the visual experience, including the park makes this an invaluable experience.

The SCPS sale is a great opportunity to get some impressive rooted plumeria at reasonable prices. Last year I got a two-tip ACW from Ken Ames for only $80. One tip bloomed this spring and the other has a large inflo now. The plant was easily 3 feet above the soil line. I have seen ACW cuttings smaller than that go for more on eBay. There is a great variety, but go early for the best selection. Last year they raffled off several 15 gal or larger specimen plumeria.

Reading these posts really makes me wish that I was in So. Ca., especially because I'm dying for an ACW. I'm jealous, have a fun day at the park.
