Joan, I bow at your feet. I thought I was the previous plumeria car packing champ, but you've humbled me -- 33 in a Prius!!! You take the crown!! And really good choices, too. I have 18 of those, but you've given me ideas!! It's possible Confetti and Barbados Showgirl are the same flower. You're in for such a treat, though, when they're blooming - congratulations!

Simi, I realized that the confetti and Barbados girl were possibly the same variety. I actually bought the six foot confetti as a gift from my mother. I intended to buy one Barbados girl for me since there were no small confetti's available but accidentally bought two. I can't take credit for the packing. I owe it all to my husband.

Joan - is that Bali Hai Gold? If it is, that's a plumeria I hear so little talk about, but it's one of the most fragrant plumerias out there. Does anyone else have it? Lynn - have you checked it out? Beautiful flower, heavy duty scent!

Celadine, Penang Peach, Slaughter Pink, Grove Farm, Plastic Pink, Jeannie Moragne, Kaneohe Sunburst, Lemon Drop, Mardi Gras, Magnum Opus, and Aztec Gold. Excellent! You'll do so well you'll need to open the first Arkansas plumeria nursery! And all starting from the little trunk of a Prius. Amazing.

Dave, I have grown plumerias for several years, but I only had one variety -- a NOID white with yellow center that was a gift. I have several plants 5 or 6 feet tall and lots of small ones. I grow the plants in the ground because they kept blowing over in pots. Before the first freeze, I dig them up, put them in plastic bags (with the mouths left open -- just to catch dirt as they dry), and store them in my insulated garage. I haven't lost more than one or two plants over the years. The reason for the trip to Texas was to get new varieties. I know I may lose more this winter because some of the varieties will not be as tough as my old ironsides white.

When you dig them up in the Fall, do you defoliate the plants at the same time, or let them naturally defoliate on their own time.

I plant my pots instead of planting the plants directly in the ground because I don't always have time just before frost to a) find the right pot size, and b) get enough soil, but I would suspect they probably do better directly in the ground rather than in pots in the ground.

Do yours get any natural or artificial light in your garage?

Dave, the day before I take the plumarias into the garage I cut off the leaves near the stem. This lets the latex dry before I take them in. Some people wash all of the dirt off of the roots before taking them in for the winter. Then they just lay the Plumeria barerooted on a shelf or something. I have never done that. I thought it might be easier on the roots to let the soil dry and fall off on its own. I use the plastic bags to keep the dirt from making a mess. I'm always sure to keep the mouths of the plastic bags open so the roots do not stay moist and rot. This has worked well for me, but the Plumeria I have stored this way is really a tough variety. Also my garage is well insulated even the doors and I don't let the plumeria touch the cold concrete floor. Please get advice from others and don't go on what I say or maybe try just one or two plants if you are interested in trying this method before you try it on your whole collection.

Forgot to say I have stored my plumies in a garage with windows (house we sold) and one with zero light (rent house while we were building) and it didn't make any difference.

Driving 9 hours each way to load the car with more plants than anyone would ever guess could be put in a Prius with a driver and a passenger.
