Heat Wave

Could I have picked a worse time? I ordered from BBB late last week & my order shipped yesterday, in the middle of a heat wave here on the east coast.

Anyone have suggestions if rooted cuttings arrive STRESSED?

Kathy id say water and shade is about the best you could do.

Check out our 7 day forecast. gonna be hot hot hot. The 70's look nice but thats usually right before sunrise. heat indexes should push 110+.

OMG! my brother lives out there in Claremore, I know it gets hot but whew! Hope you have nice shade for the plumies. (and A/C for you)

We certainly have mixed weather up here in the north. Cool and gloomy one day or even half a day; a few sprinkles, then it clears up for the rest of the day. Or two days of cool and grey weather followed by one or two full days of sun, although it is still cool. Not too much rain, but about two weeks ago we had one or two days. It is sunny and cool today so far. I remember the drought, too. Seven years of drought and water rationing the last two or three years; we even were asked to supply water to L.A. area, it was so bad; then we had to consider buying from Oregon. That was about the time it cleared up.

kinzyjr, it looks like we'll be back into our mid-to high 80s with normal afternoon thunderstorms. I'm hoping that the forecast for Sunday being a long, rainy day is true. We really need it. Ben, sadly, I lost a few things to the winter rains and heat. Discovered today my hardy hibiscus didn't make it. I'm sad about all I've lost due to the winter rains and the spring heat wave, but the saddest was my Everglades tomato, which was just beautiful and loaded with fruit, but they don't like extreme heat, so it wilted and died overnight. I managed to get some cuttings, but it's a goner.

We are back to normal temps and the hydrangeas are happy! lol The embothrium/firebush is not blooming and has never even show promise! It will get much more sun this year after trimming the firs - but we will see. I might go and see if it is trying to bloom. lol Cooper - water the heck out of the hydrangeas! If you have decent drainage don't worry about over watering. The only spot I could grow a hydrangea in my northern California garden was in a running creek! I regularly plop hydrangeas still in pots into a bucket or pan of water and leave them there to recover. People talk about root rot, but that is soil born and does not pose a problem in water. I have left plants - in containers and bare root - in water for weeks and they thrived just fine. I presently have more than 60 in my garden and propagate tons every year. We have no irrigation and hand water everything. But, this is in the PNW! Keep that in mind - and hot temps here are sporadic and the humidity is low and our nights cool off usually down to the 50 - 60's. That is the description for the Marine Climate. Northern CA is Mediterranean Climate! Fossils of hydrangeas can be found in the PNW showing that they have been growing here for millions of years.

I can only get peppers to do well in containers and then, only the small fruited hot ones like habaneros. Every time I plant peppers in the ground they only get about 10-12” tall and MIGHT produce a fruit or two. The larger fruited ones like poblanos and chilacas always end up with severe blossom end rot when I plant them in containers, too. I actually quit growing sweet peppers a couple years ago since it always felt like an effort in futility. Last year the wind took out all my pepper plants. Every time I went out there more branches had been snapped off. When I lived in Jeffco my peppers were always a “sure bet” and I’ve still got freezer bags of jalapeños and habs in my mom’s freezer, but I won’t be planting any kind of pepper this year. Partly because I didn’t plan early enough to start seeds and partly because of last years experience. “Fair to excellent” is a good way to put it for tomatoes, Greg. Some years I have so many I end up composting a bunch and other years the harvest is so measly it hardly seemed worth the effort to grow them. I haven’t grown much winter squash, but the few times I have they were underwhelming, especially considering the amount of space they take up, getting just a single squash for a huge amount of room seemed almost pointless when I could grow entire bushels of something like green beans in the same amount of space. I am growing some short-vine varieties of butternut this year so we will see how they do. maybe I’m just bad at gardening.

Yeah that is a broiler...even by Texas standards. If acclimated, your more mature plants will be fine. Morning to mid-afternoon sun and more watering. I have said it before but I have not found a way to overwater in that kind of heat. (Not saying that someone couldn't)

I have my youngsters in afternoon shade from an oak tree and mature plumerias.

Kathy the AC will be working overtime for sure.

K I know you Texans get it pretty bad also. At this rate we may be zone 9 before you know it. Actually if I had my choice we would be, :). all my smaller ones got moved to below a shade cloth for now. They would just burn up if left out. My larger ones that are plunged seem to soak it up pretty good.

Kathy, your plants will arrive stressed no matter the temperature, from being bare-rooted and shipped. They're very resilient when rooted so don't worry about it.

Just put a bucket of water--preferably rain water--out in the sun to warm up, put a few drops of Superthrive or B-1 in it, and when the plants arrive, just set them in the bucket and put the bucket in shade. That should help them draw in some moisture before you pot them up a couple hours later.

I've actually been transplanting a few pot-bound ones in this heat (just because I like to tempt the plumeria gods into smiting me) and all mine have taken it without so much as a drooping leaf. Good luck and let us know how they look!

depends where you are in Texas, El Paso that is a cool front for this time of year, Houston, a little above normal. The island? We would really be whining.

I put everything in a tub of water to soak when I bring it home.

We`ve had so much rain I have been planting stuff in the ground along with transplanting things.

Kathy, I ordered a rooted Hula Girl from BBB almost 2 weeks ago an it arrived with wrinkles from the heat/stress. But now the wrinkles aren't very noticeable at all and they're getting smaller by the day. Just wanted to share my experience and two cents. ;)
