First major setback :/

Came back from vacation to find out that there were some brutal storms in Orlando while I was gone. 9 of my 16 plants were laying on their sides, more than 1/2 the peppers on all the toppled plants are rotted from laying on the soggy ground, and 3 of my plants pretty much broke right down the middle! I was hoping to come home to a bunch of ripe pods - but this was a rude awakening. Oh well I suppose... Cut the loss, and see how the rest of the months go in recovery.

Here's a quick shot of the breaking damage to one of the savina's... The rain was too heavy for them in conjunction with the pod weight:

Thanks 'nonacook' and 'jeannespines' for your comments and encouragement! :) I liked the 'turned over' cup idea as it gave a more casual look to it....as if someone had been careless and knocked over the cup. :) I'm making another 'tea-cup' feeder where the teacups are upright. I have a metal candle-holder that I am going to glue 3 tea-cups to that can be suspended from a tree. pixie_lou, The smaller teacup bird feeders would hand from an "S" hook in a tree. I haven't actually put one up yet so they may need a loop of rope to keep them from swinging off the "S" hook and falling, but when I hang them from my finger they are level and balanced. I'll test one out today!

First major mishap in kitchen renovation

No, I don't expect any of the workmen to fix or replace. The refrig had to stay on the fringe of the renovation area and the damage probably couldn't be avoided. With all the moving of tools, lumber, and ladders, something was bound to happen. In hindsight I guess I could have avoided this mishap if I had positioned the refrige so that the doors were facing a wall and giving us just enough room to access the inside.

Thanks everyone. I'm already really good at pinching pennies and am already doing so to stick to the budget. I'm having a final meeting with our cabinet guy on Friday to make some choices. The estimate he gave us has an $1,800 range depending on the choices I make. I'm sure I can cut some there. Also my full wall pantry is quoted as quartersawn instead of plain oak which is a mistake so that will help a little too. We haven't had an estimate done for the floors but had guessed $2000 for refinishing. We want to do the entire first floor all at once, so it will just have to wait. So I think we'll be able to swing it and still do it all right. IT just stinks to have to wait on the floors. I've been waiting on them for 5 years!! skyedog - good to know. I'll have my husband call his sister (our insurance rep) and get the scoop ironcook - I did see those, I've actually had my eye on them. I'm still considering the wood anyway, even if I can budget paperstone. We'll see! johnliu - Our plumbing is new, thank goodness! We had everything re-plumbed when we remodeled our bathroom 3 years ago. I have a plumber uncle who owed my dad some favors! Whew!! I wish I had an electrician uncle...

Oh Hobby....You should of see two winters ago!! I took sick for a week where my HUGE three feet tall Gardenia resided in a huge window which was amazing..Well, it so happens that that summer I broke my heel falling off a ladder doing roofing and I could not spray my plants like I would of with the F.E... I had no friends willing to offer besides no longer my friends.. Well, during the time of just that one week I was sick, I came back to work to be greeted with a huge gardenia that looked like it was sprayed with Halloween cob web which look like fog from a distance...Little did I expect to see those dam critter, mites having a huge party crawling over the place! Do you know that I had no choice but to lift that thing over my head to the dumpster in which all those mites just fell all over me! It was disgusting..I had to strip naked when I got home outside in 30 degree weather and take a shower just to make sure I did not carry just one of those things into my house..I'm sure that one would of devastated my collection..I always had a fear of mites. always...That is why I am so careful to avoid them! I hate them..I watch all my plants all winter long looking for just one..I can usually tell when I have them, I am that good and know them that well..I can tell the damage a mile away....My 'Rosemary' Oil will always be in hand if I ever have any again.....They will never get a hold of my trees, ever... That is also the reason whey I stick them on my cold porch..No pest survives or forages in temps that cool, especially after spraying the leaves with mist, cool and a fan going...Not one bug ever..I would rather sacrifice extensive growth than deal with bugs..I almost threw away every plant I owned because It too much work to keep up..The spraying inside can be such a pain...My gardenia plants, spider mite magnets get sprayed every week no matter what, because they are kept warm inside or in my greenhouse..Don't need then attracting any for sure) Wow, you opened a can of worms with me, or should I say MITES..lol

Wow that's sad. That is not a very nice sight to come home to after time away. My plants are far from having that many pods, I recently went on vacation for a week and did not trust anyone to water or take care of, brought them all inside, watered good the morning we left. But this would not be feasable for many plants. I hope they recover well good luck.

Those downdrafts from those T-storms can be brutal.
I'll be watching my plants here in July and August when we get a few popping up.

Appreciate the condolences everyone... Still rather bummed about the situation, but really can't do much about it now. At least I'll know better for next year - the pots will all be stabilized (VERY WELL), and they will all have some very tall tomato cages in them! After seeing how things are going this time, I will also construct something to raise the pots off the ground (in conjunction with stabilizing them, and to keep the irrigation system off the ground).

...I was able to get this pull off of them today though after tossing all the rotten ones and branches littered with unripe pods:

Well, today's storm beat them up again... Maimed a bunch more plants, and this happened too - she got the ole' FL haircut :/

:( insane I would be crabby all day and the wife n kids would be annoyed by my behavior. Can't imagine that much damage to my pepper plants. Hope it the last of the storm and any future storms may they be mild.

Storm? You mean hurricane? typhoon? twister?

I've never seen wind do that to pepper plants. OTOH, I've never had that pod density on a plant, either.

That really sucks. We had 60 mph straight line winds in Minneapolis on Saturday. I was gone and was expecting the worst when I got home. To my surprise, everything I have planted survived with no issues.

More of the same weather forecasted for tonight.

If it makes you feel any better, you probably have already harvested more peppers than I will get in my short growing season.

Yow, that hurts. Sorry for your loss, but, they will come back, just gonna take a while to get back to to that level. We've had sustained winds of around 25 mph for 3 days, gusts up to upper 30's to low 40's, luckily my plants are weathering the wind ok, but that's just a normal day in OK.. I hate the wind!

Ride a bicycle. Then you'll learn to *really* hate the wind. Wee don' need no steenkin hills!

Jay, did you get any sort or reading on how high the wind actually was?

DM, no I didn't. The wind damage was all just limited to the plants blowing over though. The damage shown above is from the torrential downpour on the heavily pod laden branches, they just couldn't bear all the weight. All were broken straight down towards the base.
