Posted- White Flowers... I have lots of purple flowered and podded peppers but only a few that are purple podded like that have white flowers. I've got white flowered stuff that turns purple from the sun but not many like these that purple seems to be a color change rather than an enviornmental thing. Purira are similar to your pods but hardly any on my plants ended up being pendant.

There are both hybrid and open pollinated seeds on the market. You would have to know what variety you bought to know for sure." The local greenhouse I bought the plants from is a small one man operation who even has a small furniture store at the same location. I'm pretty sure he grows everything from seed himself as he has stacks of potting soil and other supplies along with overhead racks for more seed starting space. One reason I've done business with him for years is he is very reasonable on his prices. Last year when it was close to time to put out onion plants, I checked both Lowes and Home Depot for the White Granex variety that I like and both places wanted $3.59 / bunch. Shelby had the same variety @ $1.50 / bunch. His price on tomato and pepper plants is still around 35 cents each. I had thought of the hybrid possibility but the cayenne plants I bought last year produced just a run of the mill red cayenne pepper just like those shown in the 3rd photo. This whole mystery cross was probably 1-1000000 odds that one of the peppers I saved for seed happened to be a cross. I find this seed saving process of bagging blooms to be fascinating and started my experiment to save true seeds from my cross this morning. My Grandfather always said "Poor Man, Poor Ways" so I got to thinking about making these bags from ordinary household items. I came up with one bag fabricated from a coffee filter and another from a used dryer sheet. I'll see what happens in the next few days! Thanks again for the advice, Keith

Well, I think that these are sweet banana peppers. I sliced up the first one into rings and we were all tasting to see what it was. Zero heat. I was so mad at these virtually tasteless peppers that I trashed the rest of that one. I picked 4 more of them, knowing that I have to come up with something to do with them. I ended up stuffing them with a cream cheese mixture and they were pretty good. There will be so many of them, I might end up pickling them with an habanero or some other hot pepper in the mix to give them a little heat. And I guess I will have to buy some of the jalapenos for my salsa this year. Mystery solved with a disappointing ending.

Yup, jalapenos that are picked early are green. If you leave them on the plant until they are fully ripe, they turn red. Fully ripe jalapenos actually taste quite a bit better than the green ones, its just that it takes longer and their shelf life is shorter once ripe, so you generally don't see them for sale at major grocery chains. Kind of like tomatoes, they're picked green and then artificially "ripened" with ethlyne gas just before they get put on the shelves. It makes them turn red, but doesn't really do anything for the flavor.
