King palm seedling really taking off

This king seedling was germinated last winter. It is really taking off. I'm going to need to move it. The fronds are getting too big and are hitting the window. This will be my last post for awhile I promise.

Andy - nice to see you back on the forum. I have a couple of King seedlings that germinated last Feb 2006 and they look almost identical in size to yours. I germinated about 10 seeds and only 2 survived. I hope they are speading roots in the pot and will be ready to grow this summer. I really thought these seedlings would take off over the summer, but they grew very slowly or maybe I'm impatient or maybe both.

So if i was to T-bud now, would i be cutting my buds from this year's growth, and would it matter where along the branch i got my bud from (ie. tip end, mid-section, or closest to the point of attachment? And secondly, I understand the concept with regards to budding onto a rootstock, but when you bud onto the branches (like you are going to do on your 3-branched tree), where do you target the placement of the bud (top-side, bottom, how far along the branch,????). I'll definitely give it a try if i can get a little more feedback.....and thanks for taking the time with these questions.....

Actually its my indoor one :/ This will be the last time I buy a coconut palm and not inspect it better. I thought those ones just had normal damage from being inside too long so I thought I would save them. But they ended up dying and infecting my other one... Go figure. I bet they probably watered over head too often. I have no clue how long they were there. If this palm survives its pretty tough.Its getting attacked by different angles. Doens't help that my southern windows have shade cloth to keep light out. And then I discovered ants farming palm aphids and they were infested badly near the newest spear and fronds. I mean the fronds and spears were so badly infested they were almost completely covered with aphids. And for a while soapy water wouldn't kill them. I ended up wiping off most of them then spraying with more concentrated dish soap and water. I wouldn't be surprised if thats how the fungus was introduced and re-introduced to my indoor palm. Temps in my house are kept near 68f but drop to about 64f or colder at night. I havn't watered since Nov. I need to water again. How often do you water yours while its inside? Anyway the one outside I already knew was gonna die. Its still alive somehow but really all the fronds are dead. only thing alive is the stems and small parts of the newest frond. - US_Marine

I live in Maricopa, AZ. Winter temps at night have moderated over the years due to the explosive growth of the town. Where as you could count on a hard freeze every year by mid January, now it just doesn't happen. Having said that, we are in an area filled with citrus groves and trees that do well, so this place doesn't really get as cold as many think. The record low temp of 7 was eons ago and is disputed since no town in the Phoenix area has ever been that cold, and that temperature will never ever be reached again. My backyard is full of tropicals. I have a lush shade tree - Tipuana, it's a tropical from south america and doesn't do well at temps below 30, it stays green all year round. As for palms, well - almost anything will do ok here if you take the right precautions for palms that need some extra care. I have a friend who has a dwarf coconut palm in a huge planter near the side of his house - it's doing just fine. I've seen many people put King palms in planters and they do just fine. I have banana in my yard, citrus, - the severe cold snap of Jan. 2007 did some damage, but nothing too bad... our coldest years are behind us as far as record lows, even Maricopa has started generating it's own heat island, and we're only 15 miles out from the huge Phoenix metro urban heat island. I've not recorded a temperature lower than 26 ever in my yard... and that was only twice. Past couple winters nothing below 34. Even those temps are of very short duration. Unfortunately, I have recorded temps above 118 every year since 1997. Again, given the proper care/shade/water - almost anything will do well. I am buying a King palm from the Target nursery today, I will put in a planter as it's only a small 5 gallon, it will go in a nice planter under the Tipu tree... can't wait to see how it does!

My earlier post, was meant for a first time palm seed grower and not to question the varieties pictured as to accuracy , but as mentioned, if you've not grown some before , you might find the odd look of immature leaves, as leading you to question what you planted, is all I meant. If I hadn't known for example that the soil used was devoid of weed and other types of seeds where I planted my date palm seeds, those first crab grass looking leaves that came up , might have made me question what I was looking at or perhaps some other type of plant even, though I did cheat a bit and dig down carefully from soil level at the leaves to see if indeed they met up with a palm seed, and not some other type of unintentional seed!! I noticed somewhere else that someone had started a data base of sorts of many types of plant seedling photos for identification purposes, should one question their plants for accuracy, or in the case they lost the name tags, and I guess such a thing might be helpful for identifying young palm seedlings in some cases. It's not unsual for me to plant other types of seeds, and sometimes have unexpected results if things were mislabeled etc.

I must say , years back when considering various palms to try indoors from a specialist palm nursery I'd order from in Florida, I was looking for some that would develope a nice trunk at a young age , but still not be too tall for my low ceilings at a young age, and I did sort of find a couple of those, though the "girths" aren't anywhere near what mature ones would have of course. On the other hand my Chinese fan palm only grew at the base for many years as the base increased in diamter over that time, til finally it started to show the "true" trunk with a diameter of six or eight inches, but still only perhaps eight to ten inches of true trunk below the crown shaft. I think many of the other plams tend to be "slow" in showing a trunk as well, though the crownshaft and of course the fronds are very lovely long before the trunks are formed!! The topic does remind me of the question, "Where does that crownshaft end technically , to become the trunk below? I think by definition the crowshaft for most varieties is the area extending from the lowest leaves on the trunk, to the top, but then of course those "lowest" leaves on some varieties that don't shed the old fronds naturally without some help, may extend all the way to the base of the palm , and I'm sure there's a true trunk under those dead fronds , if you get my meaning??

I see doing a little more research, the term "crownshaft" is used to apply to the way the leaf bases wrap around the trunk from the oldest fronds in the case of pinnate palms "only" I guess, so I'm not sure what the crown is called in the case of fan type palms or is that just plain "crown"?? Clearly there's a lot to be learned in the world of palms for me, when it just comes to understanding the specialized terms , when describing them in general!

I think you can grow just about any palm indoors/outdoors as long as it is a managable size. This king seedling actually seems to be growing faster than over the summer. Maybe as it matures its growth speeds up or maybe it likes a constant sun and 70 over the herky jerky summer conditions.
