Lessons learned so far

Some lessons learned so far this year.

First I want to say thank you again to everybody who sent me seed this year. I have received so many kind offers that itÂs amazing to me that so many people are so kind.

The peppers I planted this year were my first (from seed).

I bought those flats with clear lids and the peat 1" squares. I also bought the plastic cells that make 72 per flat.

I bought miracle grow seed starting mix.

I planted each cell with about 3-5 seeds and used a pencil to set the depth of the seed. About ½". Then I pressed the soil around the cell to cover. I kept notes on all these, but I have very poor germination on many types of peppers.

I wrote to some and they offered help buy saying that I might have pressed them too hard with soil or might have gone too deep.

I did some re-plants and had much better results. Lots of peppers that I had nothing on the first planting. Too bad I had wasted about 2/3rds of my seeds.

So I had about 400 plants growing. Some with about 20 or so plants and some that were just one or two of each.

Mid April I started transplanting them into 10 oz cups. I cut holes in them for drainage and things were going great. (Except for my wife is real mad about the front room being overrun by plants everywhere)

In May I started putting a tray outside for a while and then swapping it with another and so on to harden them up.

3 Mondays ago I put 24 flats of peppers in cups outside for about 2 hours. I noticed that they were turning white!!!

I brought them back inside, but Most all have died. Mass killing by I think sunburn. Too bright and too long .

Not all died and I still have a nice crop of peppers with about 100 or so plants and about 20 types.

Some have started to flower and I hope to have some peppers growing soon and some seeds to re-offer back soon.

ItÂs a learning curve for sure this pepper growing. I hope others will learn from my mistakes.

Again thanks to everybody who sent me seed and knowledge

Dennis
