Foreverlad, I just did a quick google and it seems there's a dwarf variety of the white bird of paradise, but I suspect that most of them carried by the big box companies are the large ones unless they specify them as dwarf. I think the dwarf variety might be a more exotic one .. only guessing here. When I bought a few from a local nursery here, the owner told me to give them a lot of water and they'll grow like weeds. It seems he was right. The last year was a very wet season and that's how the growth really took off fast. I planted some of them along the fence line and a few has grown over 10-12 ft tall now. I've seen them growing really big .. like 20-30 ft or so. They even develop a trunk. There are a couple of pictures posted here that I've found online. It's incredible. One of them even looks like the traveler's palm which I wasn't able to keep it alive when I planted it here a few years back. Do you plant yours in a sunny location? It seems that a sunny location will speed up their growth. There used to be an Oak tree that block a lot of sun from them in the previous years. When the tree was gone, they were a lot happier. How close is it to the pool? Wonder if it could be from the chemicals in the pool water. What is the soil like? Drainage , etc? Has the sun exposure changed?

Air layering involves damaging a plant in such a way as to get it to grow roots where it would not normally, allowing you to get a brand new, big plant. White BOP is all leaf above the soil. It has no stalk, just leaves. If you air layer, the plant above where you cut it will just die. There are only two ways to naturally propagate this plant - from seed, or by vegetative propagation, when it grows a new corm underground (a whole new baby plant).

Leaves that grow out in low light conditions don't do well by being put into direct sun. It's better to put them out under a tree where they'll get filtered sunlight and then slowly increase their exposure. A sudden few hours of the direct sun is too intense for them. The adaptation isn't a matter of gradually increasing length of time but of gradually increasing intensity of exposure. The other issue is that the high elevation wouldn't only increase the intensity, but likely the humidity levels would be low. Plants usually are able to cope with higher intensity of sun if relative humidity is high. If you don't have a suitable place to give it filtered sun then maybe put it out in early morning or very late afternoon sun when intensity is much lower.
