Azapa olive tree

I am looking to buy an Azapa olive tree, and I am not able to locate any nursery in USA that has it. Can anybody suggest me one? It is thought to derive from the Mediterranean Sevillana (or Gordal) tree, so if you know anybody who sells these too, I would appreciate any directions.

Based on a previous thread here a few months ago, Azapa is probably not the best choice of olive to try in cold climates.

In my opinion it's a crap shoot in the ground. You may get away with it for a year or three, but will lose your investment at some point down the road. Some are more cold hardy than others, but you are still taking a big chance and hoping we don't have a really cold below normal winter here in Oklahoma.

I might mention that the guy in Northern Mississipi quoting that study where trees survived 5 days below freezing seemed oblivious to the fact that they survived but only from the ground. Regrowing an olive from the roots every year or two seems illogical at best.

We have already had 5 straight days below freezing this season and today is the first day of winter. It doesn't make sense in my opinion to spend quite a bit of money on exotics and leave them to the mercy of our harsh climate. Northern Mississippi and Oklahoma really can't be compared even though they are the same climate zone.

One major factor in my mind why you can't compare the two states is the fact that Oklahoma has the highest freeze thaw ratio the the U.S. Our erratic highs and lows are the main reason we don't have mature healthy hardwood forests like those seen in states a little farther east.

Not sure where you are, but there are olive presses scattered throughout California. You go there with your load, and they will give you the oil (and keep the pomace as well as some of your money). An olive press is much more complex and expensive than an apple press. It will be 10 years before you are up to 30-40 lbs of olives per tree per year (and those 100 lbs will give you only 10-20 lbs of oil, which is very little. My family of three uses 30-35 lbs a year. If you do the pressing yourself, you may only get 5-10 lbs). In the intervening time, I would just eat some fresh (fresh olives fried with a drop of oil and salt are wonderful, and not bitter at all while hot), freeze some (they are great in all sorts of stews and braised meates) and cure most of them. Middle Eastern friends do the curing in their bathtub. For bigger crops, water in May through July, but withhold water later.

i wouldnt doubt it because there are naturalized parrots in many cool areas. Brooklyn is a zone 7 and has parrots thriving in some communities. They are in abundance too but arent very widespread and live together. Just like all other city birds they eat a lot of food that is on the ground but will eat a lot of other foods too. They dont look like tropical parrots, but can be trained to talk, but probably will never do so in the wild. Definitely not those beautiful tropical looking parrots you see as pets or in the zoo, but they do have nice green colors to them. But as far as stealing fruit, there are lots of other much more common birds that will do that job a lot quicker than these parrots in brooklyn (I believe they are called quaker parrots and are from argentina). I think they are also in other areas but Im really only familiar with the ones in Brooklyn. Good luck! -Alex

While olives may be quite drought tolerant when established, they DO appreciate watering during very dry spells. It is suggested to water 1-2 times per month in summer, with a slow deep soaking (not a sprinkler) - no water in winter. A soaker hose or drip irrigation are very efficient methods of slow water delivery. Flowering and fruit production depends heavily on proper pruning practices. Production is heaviest on one year old wood and you want the tree canopy to be vase shaped, open and airy. There is an old Italian saying regarding olives that you want to prune them so that a "swallow can fly through them", meaning that light and air are allowed to penetrate into the center of the tree. This link offer good pruning tips and a helpful video. What is causing the dieback is impossible to determine from just the photos. If you resided in this country, I'd suggest taking in photos and samples to a plant pathology specialist (via extension service) for diagnosis but not sure what similar services you may have in Turkey. This link provides an excellent overview of olive care and cultural requirements plus outlines a number of disease pathogens - some quite serious - that can affect olives in a manner similar to what you are seeing. Regardless, any dead portions should be removed but until you are able to ascertain exactly what is causing the problem, I would suggest sterilizing any pruning equipment between cuts. But my first order of business would be to locate someone local to you to properly diagnose any possible disease issues.

Planting an avocado tree where there was an olive tree

I would like to plant another avocado tree, but the best location is where I have an old olive tree. The olive tree is over 35 years old and is slowly dying - just old I guess. If I remove the olive tree and most of the roots - would the soil and remaining decomposing roots be too harmful for growing an avocado tree?

Can you explain what the freeze/thaw ratio is and where one might find a table of its values for each state and/or country?

There's got to be some way to use that piece of information to our advantage. Any thoughts?
