Today my students were watching the clock. (They don't often pay attention to me, but they do not watch the clock.)

Suddenly they all cheered. It's 11/11 on 11/11/11.

Make a wish! They all said it over and over and over.

Did any of you stop and make a wish at 11/11 on 11/11/11?

I have not heard that expression before.

It sure beats tornadoes and earthquakes.

OOPS. my message was rejected because the subject was 11/11. I hope this goes through.

I never knew it was supposed to be good luck to make a wish at 11:11 on 11/11/11, so I guess I missed my chance too.

However, all day long, I was mindful that it was Veterans Day and that we, as a nation and as individuals, owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all those who have served, are serving or will someday serve in our military.

I think we are lucky, and not just at 11:11 on 11/11/11 to live in a nation where so many millions of our citizens have been ready, willing and able to join up, serve in the military, and preserve all the freedoms we have, including the freedom to garden.

If any veterans are reading this, thanks for serving our nation.

Thank you, Dawn. We owe so much to our veterans.
THank you, to my daughter, Shelley who is completing her 20 years as a Navy Chief.

It is hard to understand why in this day and age our Veterans Day is not a holiday for the schools.

Thank you to all you veterans. I do appreciate your hard work and sacrifices.

I thought that tree was a Burr oak you posted a pic of a while ago. Maybe the burr is beside the tree you posted now. The leaves you posted are probably pin, Nuttals or Shumard. I have 3 Q Robur from acorns planted in 2009 or 2010 ( can't remember without checking the plant marker, and it's cold and snow on the ground ) and one of the seedlings is 9 ft tall. The other 2 are a more normal size of about 4 1/2 ft tall. My largest tree is a pin oak planted in 2003, and it may have been 3 or 4 from the pot bought at Lowes. Just a guess.

Boxo, one cane wonder or not, that Oklahoma would set the stage for the Biggest and Best Rogers & Hammerstein, lol! What a grand showing, and of course it Tops the bouquet! Whoo-hoooo, whoo-hoooooooooo! Oh, dear! I forgot to mention the blazin' amazin' Blaze of Glory. As for AD, I'm embarrassed. From the view/angle I thought hmmm is that AD or is it Sunset Celebration...hmmm. I shudda ate my parents' hemp seeds first and blamed it on that, hahaha! I'm actually writing from my parents' house. My mom bought a bag of hemp seeds from the Wild Oats Market and it is DELICIOUS! lol! So between imaginary tequila lounging at Boxo's Garden and hemp seeds I am STOKED, haha! The hemp seeds are shaped and taste similar to sesame seeds but they are actually more tasty because they are meatier and have a very sweet cashew taste to them...They go delicious with the Costco crab cakes, lol! and Japanese rice. When I make my own gourmet crab cakes I will definitely use have to get a bag of those hemp seeds. Cheers and will talk soon! Whoo-hooooo! Whoo-hoooo! Oh, forgot, you must give me a botanical lesson on how to tell Phlox's apart from Hydrangea. You grow both, and I embarrassed myself again with my Dad. He said I know my plants! That is a Hydrangea, when I said uhhhh, isn't that a Phlox? hee-hee! I am not! on my game tonight, lol!

that's very neat--with my luck, I'd give up on the "valuable, useful item" about 2 months before I found the missing part. Though, actually, maybe I can match you. My Dh had a tripod--a pretty nice one, actually. The screw that holds the camera on fell out while the tripod was in the closet (that big one, in my "massive closet project" thread), back before kids, when that closet held all sorts of grownup toys, etc., The closet was semi-messy, not a lot of infrastructure. I knew that screw was in there--it cldn't have gone anywhere else. I looked many times. So I held onto the tripod. A couple of times I thought of contacting Slik (the mfr) to get a new one, but never did. Finally we were emptying that closet, many years later--probably not 11, maybe 5--and there it was! Of course, now we'll have encouraged people to hold onto their stuff just hoping to find that missing part (and they'll be junking of their closets)--isn't that one of those classic pieces of advice? "if it's missing a part and you can't find it, get rid of it anyway"? LOL And yes, the moral is, "Clean up your crap." Bcs your crap is making it hard to see the stuff that's out of place. I found 3 things of DD's in that closet purge that she had lost and we were stressing over. Her house keys (one of which is $100 to replace), her scientific calculator, and a $50 gift card she had forgotten about (and that I thought she'd spent a year ago). I pointed out to her that keeping the closet neat means she can SEE stuff like that. It won't be camouflaged (the keys were in the pouch, in plain sight on top of the dresser) or obscured. It's also why I like to encapsulate things. That's one thing I did in my closet--put EVERYTHING into a box. Then little stupid things will be findable. (unless someone puts it in the wrong box, LOL!)

Hooray for Shelley! My dad and his brothers served in the Navy in WWII and some of them served during the Korean Conflict too. The Navy took those country boys off the farm and showed them the world, for which they were forever grateful.

My daughter loves to travel. She has visited so many countries, and has learned so much.

She would have developed skills outside of the military, but the military is the one place where you can learn as you go. You do not have to be worried about a 3rd month lay off, and being out of a job.

I heard on the news that a baby boy was born on this veteran's day to a veteran at 11:00 on 11/11/11. Imagine that, that'll be one birthdate that will be easy to remember.

Days like President's Day and Memorial Day are just fun days out of school. I think the kids respect Veteran's Day more because they don't get out...at least at the elementary level. They have a Veteran's Day assembly with real veterans and each class does something. One grade makes posters. Another grade dresses up like patriots. A couple of other grades sing patriotic songs. Most everyone dresses in red, white, and blue.

I think that is wonderful. OUr kids do seem to respect our country and our military, but we do not do much if anything to make the day special. We do get a report that our ROTC has done something, but that does not involve all the kids.
