I know this is a rather old thread, but I ran across it online and I just had to join in, Here are mine; Orange Crownshaft Palm/Areca Vestaria. This is hands down my favorite. The orange one. The maroon form is pretty, but I love orange. King Palm/Archontophoenix. They are all beautiful, but my very favorite is Pupurea. I also love purple. Date Palm/Phoenix Dactylifera. Pretty and delicous! Too bad they don't really fruit here in South Florida :( Pygmy Date Palm/Phoenix Roebelinii Cat Palm/Chamaedorea Cataractarum. I like it because in addition to it's beautiful, graceful, iconic palmate fronds, it stays compact and bushy. And it's easy to find! Sabal Palmetto Saw Palmetto/Serenoa Repens. Another nice,bushy palm, I especially love the blue forms. Dwarf Palmetto/Sabal Minor Mediterranean Fan Palm/Chamaerops Humilis Jelly Palm/Butia Capitata Areca Palm/Dypsis Lutescens. I actually don't like how they look when they are trunked. I think they are far more attractive when they are clumped and bushy. Gorgeous fronds. Bismarck Palm/Bismarckia Noblis And, last but not least, the Coconut/Cocos Nucifera. The iconic, archetypal, symbol of the tropics. And delicious! And useful too!

Hello all, I came across my own thread doing a google search for more Brahea sp super silver seeds :) I didn't know anyone had posted here since last summer. Hello Jim, So far this is a list of the palms I've had luck germinating: Sabal urensana Sabal minor Louisiana Sabal rosei Sabal maritima Sabal X Texensis Brahea armata Brahea sp. Super Silver Trachycarpus wagnerianus So far I haven't thrown anything out, but what I think a big problem is: I didn't get very fresh seeds. Sabals seem to be immune to being stored for a long time, regardless of what type of sabal it is. I know for a fact that my Sabal X Texensis seeds were not fresh, yet nearly all of them germinated after a month. I'm having a lot of trouble getting Trachycarpus seeds to germinate. So far since June of last year I've only had a few waggie's come up (after nearly 5 months), but I'm not throwing anything out yet. Some additional seeds I'm trying now are: Butia purpurascens Chamaerops humilis var. Vulcano Guihaia argyrata (Trachycarpus sp silver dwarf) Trachycarpus sp. Manipur Trachycarpus princeps (true white form) Trachycarpus princeps (cultivated) Trachycarpus nanus Trachycarpus oreophilus Trithrinax Schisophylla (sp?) topher, You're right, and I brought everything inside since I made this thread at the beginning of last summer. I've started heating everything but the trachy's recently, but so far I'm only having luck with sabals. My guess is old seeds, I hope that's not the case with this new batch I have now. palmetto-pal, I got them at a Lowes in Virginia Beach last summer. You can get ones just as nice from a mail order natives on ebay for less than I paid and you won't have to drive anywhere :) novaplantguy, I have had 3 waggies sprout from ~20 seeds so far. As of right now they're only on their first leaves and are still very tiny. You should check out mb palms on ebay, he sells waggie seedlings at pretty reasonable prices. And as far as how fast waggies grow, my large one (large for a waggie anyway) has grown faster than any of my fortunei's. I just baught another one of similar size. I'll try to post a pic later. Hello treeguy ny, As of yet none of my nainital have germinated :( And as for my big needles, we'll see. So far I've peeked under their coverings and they look ok, but come spring I'll ultimately know. We got down to -23F this year so I'm hoping for the best!

Ok, here are the pics I promised, and Ill link you to the rest of the album at the end of this post. Im only gonna post the pics of my lil trachy in here. First is just the latest shot of the whole thing. Not too much difference really, but there are 3 new leaves. Pic 1: This next pic is is looking down the center. you can see the new leaves, and how they look different from the older / outer leaves. Pic 2: In this next pic, I took at at an angle, so the two leaves that are coming into the photo from the bottom right towards to top left diagonally. The leaf that is behind ( the older leaf) as you can see is darker green, and much more narrow, and the leaflets folded nearly close, compared to the lower, brighter, wider leaf in front of it. That older leaf is the one that is blocking a clear view of the chair in the center of the photo. Pic 3: In this last pic, the 3 new leaves are clearly visible as well. The two leaves in the very center of the pic facing the camera are the focus of this pic. The leaf that appears to be lower, is the 2nd newest leaf, as you can tell since it is shorter, yet still it has opened. You can see the 3rd and newest leaf opening down in the middle Behind the 2nd newest leaf, is another older leaf, and here too you can clearly see the difference. the older leaf in the back ground in the center is narrower and its "leaflets" are more folded closed. So those were the difference I was talking about, they seem to be similar to the difference in your leaves, but yours may be more dramatic since your palm appears to be slightly older/ larger. What do ya think?

Well, I did not get everything, ( or anything for that matter) done today, in so far as getting anything in the ground. However, I did get these today: ***************** So, a short trip to home depot here in Alexandria (S. Pickett St. for those familliar) and what do I find that had just arrived there? ....... Sabal Minor. About 30 of them. The tag calls them "blue dwarf palmettos", and then the actual name underneath the title on the tag was S. Minor. $23.00. I couldnt resist. I went thru them and picked out the one that was the most visually appealing to me. The one I liked only had 2 growth tips, most of them had 3. I know they are young, but some of them are producing fan leaves like the one I got. Some of them were just starting to produce fan leaves and had mostly strap leaves, while some had shed most of their strap leaves, and had more fan leaves like the one I purchased. Was completely NOT expecting to see those there, so of COURSE I had to purchase one, especially when I discovered the price. =o) Ok, sorry for the S. Minor bit in the needle thread. On to more "ON TOPIC" things... I mentioned I was heading down to a place I "rediscovered" last week, to my surprise that had tons of cold hardy palms, yuccas, and some sago palms... ill post a whole n other thread with pics about that shortly.... Anyway, I went back for the needle palms I mentioned earlier in this thread for $89.00, that were pretty good size. Well, everything was %25 off, so I actually got it for $70.26. Anyway, here it is. She is pretty healthy looking, aside from a few old dead fans and straps that need to be removed. She's got about 6 or so sizeable suckers, and her main trunk is fairly tall maybe 6-8"? and, I think it is a she. She has an old flower spike on her main crown that you can see in one of the pics, and she stands about 2 feet tall or so at her largest leaf tips. Anyway...not trying to gloat at all here, but she is a pretty nice specimine and at a great price dont ya think? Here she is....
