What tempertaure should I bring date palm inside?

I have a date palm (Phoenix dactylifera)I raised from a pit that's now about 10 years old. I retired from work this year and brought the plant home from where I had it growing in a courtyard window where it had been under climate control all year. When I brought it home in August, the temps in daytime were in the 80's and nighttime in the 60's. I live in upstate New York (US). Now it's in the mid to upper 50's in the day in in the mid to upper 40's at night. The palm still looks good, though. I want to know at what temperatures should I start to think about bringing it indoors? I've been putting it off because it's HUGE now (about 8 feet tall and between it an the pot probably weights 50 - 60 pounds).

They han handle freezing weather, but I would take it inside once nights are forecasted to go in the low 30s. There isnt a reason to stress it out by frosts and freezes and risk losing it. But nights in the 40s are fine, but it probably wont grow much until next summer!

You have enough inside space for this one! I agree, they can probably do fine down into the low 30's/upper 20's as minimum temps--especially if kept on the drier side. I don't have the dactylifera variety. Have mostly canariensis, roebellini, and a few others (Senegal and Cliff Island--forgot the species for these). So-called "true date" I always had problems with. They are a real desert species and resent high humidity and prolonged wetness--so watch for that. If they are anywhere as thorny as canariensis, be very carefull inside with positioning. I have several large canariensis that I grew from seed--and one of them is MASSIVE. Can't imagine it in any home, it's so prickly.--Mine go into a large, loft garage for the Winter where January temps are between 32 F and 60F. and are watered only when necessary. Good luck!

My pygmy date palm has been in my living room for 2 years. I DO notice it has a nasty habit of collecting dust and being difficult to keep clean - the best way for me was to give it a day outside once in a while and hit it with the hose on a light spray. It has grown VERY slowly but leaves turning brown has been a continuing problem. I have had a wonderful experience with my spindle palm as an indoor palm - even in relatively low light areas. It continues to grow indoors, although very slowly - and is beautiful, majestic-looking, and the leaves stay nicely green for a long time. I find they aren't easy to find, but if you find one, a spindle palm has worked out great for me. btw good call on the majesty palm. They don't really like being indoors - although there is no way one would grow very fast indoors. Good part about majesty palms is they are disposably-priced :)

I don't know what to tell you either but wanted to give a little support for you and your hubby. I hope he is recovering nicely! I always wrap things in sheets and blankets if I'm afraid they will freeze. I also put any pots I may have (which aren't many) on the side of my house that is sheltered from the north wind. There is quite a temp difference in that area and that's where they spend the winter. That may not work at your place, though.

hello everyone, I am late to join this forum but we are currently in the process of establishing a palm garden is Mandurah, WA. There have not been many contibutors in the forum from over this way, so hopefully this might encourage more western gardeners to join in. Initially I was worried about planting tropical palms this far south but after seeing some of the wonderful specimins growing very well in and around Mandurah I eventually persueded the family to let me have a plam garden. We have begun to plant a variety of palms in the front garden, most of which I have seen growing very well in my local area. I have planted (common names)Bangalows, Triangles, Spindles, Golden Canes, a jelly palm, Majestics, a European Fan, a Bismark and a bunch of different cycads but I also have a heap more in pots ready to plant out including Hawaiian fans, Alexanders and Kentias . I would like to obtain a few more tropical palms like "teddybears" and other varieties of Dypsis as well as some various charmadoreas to underplant with once the more sun hardy varieties get larger. Well I hope this might encourage some more West Australian gardeners to join in and contribute some of their knowledge about growing palms over this side of the country. Adam Harbeck

Yesterday, not being able to work outside, I transplanted the date palms into larger containers. The roots were trying to grow into the bottom of the styrofoam cups they were in. Here's what they look like today. I had four that didn't come up, I dumped those out to examine the pits, and since I know I didn't plant them till they had roots sticking out, I can only assume that three didn't make it. Only one of the pits had any hint of a root showing. But eight plants are better than 50% germination. Here are the Meyer lemon trees:I have repotted some of these into larger containers. They will not stand the winters in Zone 6A, so they will not be able to be planted outside. And these are the apple trees:I'll start these "hardening off" now so that I can plant them in the ground.

A lot has to do with how much rain you are getting. Prolonged exposure to cool/cols weather will be more harmfull than a few nighs in the mid-high 30s. People often ask what certain palms can take and my advice is always to error on the side of caution. Just because a palm CAN take something doesn't mean that it likes to. I took my coconuts and bottle palms in oce nights were falling into the high 40s. We had a couple of wet days in the low 50s and that's when I took my Ph. Roebelinin in. We're actually about to have a few days in the mid-70s and I will take most of my palms in and out as it is still supposed to fall into the 40s despite the mild days.

Not a recommended practice, but I left my date palm seedlings out on a night where it hit 24*F down here. Keep in mind that the daytime high was close to 60*F, and that it only stayed 24*F for about an hour.

When I was in Pennsylvania, I would always put them out any time the temp was 40*F or above to get some sun. They seem to be fine with the cool, dry fall. Just don't let them get soaked, and then have a freeze. They really hate that.
