repot next spring. You will be amazed when you repot, how tight of a root mass you're going to see. Especially, if it is a plumie that is a fast grower, they get rootbound fast. All roots and no soil nutrients to eat. Since the plant is going into dormancy, it is OK to postpone the transplant til next spring. When you do repot, do your best to undo the root mass to prevent roots from growing round and round like they've been doing. you can apply rooting powder right after cutting or when ready to stick in soil. Doesn't make much of a diff. The KEY thing is to let branch callous, which should be anywhere from 1-3 weeks. Being that you're close to end of your warm season, I would just let the branch sit in some dry and warm part of your house and stick in soil next spring or whenever it gets warm in your area. And back to your broken branch, the flesh should look white. If you see the tiniest hint of "yellowing" right now, cut, cut, cut until you see nothing but white. Then dip in rooting powder or not. Finally. I live in Houston and am relatively successful rooting in the fall, but being that you are in MI, is why I suggest that you just let the branch be dormant until next season. Any chance removing the leaves will reduce the wind stress on the branches to allow it to heal? Otherwise I would remove it and root it in the spring.

Looks good. I think it might have wanted a bit more sun. Once it starts to leaf out again do you have another spot with some shade for the clay pot? Once the cut hardens off a bit you should look for a sealer like caulk or wax to limit water from sitting on the stem. Hopefully the cut on the stem is near multiple leaf scars which is where the branch(es) will develop. I try to find the ideal place to prune and then adjust to get the most number of leaf scars just under the cut. It results in multiple branches more "sometimes" than not. Generally speaking I remove the leaves from the cutting by clipping on the leaf stem to prevent dehydration. the left over stem will eventually dry out and fall off.

Also, I have a question for you, do you prefer plastic or terra cotta pots? I am going to be repotting a lot in the spring and I am curious which I should go with. I have a mixture of both right now, and I know that roots tend to stick to terra cotta, and I don’t have much experience with plastic. Would love your opinion.
