Big box stores
Comments (23)What you are seeing is the effect of giant purchasing departments... They buy hundreds of thousands of plants of each variety... They cost nothing per unit... They ship them all over the entire USA... There may be some variation on what they sell by region - but it doesn't seem like it's a whole lot. For example - I always chuckle when I see Tall Fescue or apple trees that require some dormancy period for sale in South Florida box stores... No - they won't grow down there... Sorry. If you ask the people in the garden centers - for the most part they know which stuff is doomed and will try to steer you away from it... It's pretty sad that they don't have any control over what they sell in those cases - or they could provide customers with a better chance at success... For the most part - the varieties they sell around here aren't particularly good - but will at least produce fruit if the owner takes care of the proper maintenance.... Which you can't do if you want to buy the stuff at the box stores... Ironically, those Box stores don't sell any of the proper sprays, fungicides, or fertilizers.... Thanks...See MoreBuying at a Big Box store
Comments (36)Hi Lucky, Yes, I saw your explanation about the bugs. I don't have any experience, so I suggested you might want to see if your county where you live has an agricultural extension society and call them tomorrow. If the BBS are charging $10 per plant, then they must be very hard to get and rare in your area. For less money, perhaps consider ordering directly either from Optimara or from one of the specialty growers because you would possibly have a better chance of getting something less likely to have pests. The seed trays I got were under $10 each, and can be found for even less, I bought mine at a higher priced garden center. The long, narrow rectangular shape holds quite a lot, plus they are vented. I don't recall which thread where someone posted a photo of the exact same trays I got. Perhaps Diana remembers. Some people in my AV club also use clear plastic shoe boxes. The round cake boxes never worked for me, but that was before I joined the forum, so I did not open them to ventilate, so things rotted. Having trays where you can lift the domes off is easier, soil does not get tossed around as much, they are stable on the counter or floor. Diana, you wrote that you separated some suckers from new plants, that is a kindness to the plant! You wrote: I also took 2 suckers from it so I have 3 of them (why?). Comments (18)Jeff, and others another question: Are the roots in Jeff's picture above good viable roots? Now I know that sounds brain-dead on my part and I should know better. The reason I ask is because the plant I purchased was planted in pure peat moss, very wet because an unknowing "associate" just soaked it big time and when I un-potted it, most of the roots fell off. There were some white tipped roots. I re-potted in a more course mix and pray that it makes it. So my question: If all of the roots rot, is this Aloe like some other succulents and by removing the dead material and allowing time to callous, will it regenerate new roots?...See MoreA find at a big box store HD
Comments (9)Thank you. I will try to take pics, didn't think of that. I don't know the names (they are not marked) but the Hahniis look like: solid dark green, dark green & light green banded, dark & light green banded with yellow vertical border on the outside leaf edge, and dark green with yellow vertical border on the outside leaf edge. I also bagged a S. tri.'Moonshine' and S.tri.'Laurentii', and then the S. cylindrica 'African Spear' - it's a nice colony of them in the pot. Weird, I never looked twice at these plants - but I'm really enthused about them suddenly....See MoreKawagoe(Home of SF 49ers Santa Clara CA)
