How much cold can a wonder eggplant tolerate?
Comments (4)I don't know that eggplant, but I have eggplants in the garden and they can take a light freeze. I don't think 50 is low enough to cause any damage to yours, even in a pot. Actually, 2 of mine are in large containers and they made it through last winter just fine, with a couple of light freezes....See MoreAnyone know how the St. Augustine Coconut palm is doing?
Comments (5)This was taken on Dec 29th 2009. I hope who ever cares for it will protect it. Otherwise the prognosis is not good. It was 30 degrees at St Augustine Airport this morning and 29 in NW St. Johns County at my house. Today's max was 44. 32 now at post time. I wish I can post the pic directly but can't seem to get it to cooperate. Any help or suggestions will be appriciated. Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreMy Coconut Palms
Comments (25)The picture of your dwarf coconut tree looks nice there. It has healthy looking fronds. I wonder if it's just a dwarf, or is it really sick? So, were you able to get fruit out of it all the 10 years you've had it? Thanks for the link to the Indonesian website. They do have a lot of healthy looking coconut bonsai. I'm still trying to find out if they actually will produce fruit eventually. I've looked at some bonsai fruit trees on the you tube and they seem to be able to flower and produce some fruit. It would make a lot of sense for people like us to consider having bonsai trees if we cannot be sure that we can keep these tropical plants alive in the ground. You sure are a lot closer to the equator than where I am. You're over 800 miles and I'm around 2,500 miles off the equator. It's nice that you have the warm enough temperature to keep these beautiful trees there. So, do you have to manually irrigate your your landscape, or do you have an auto irrigation? It would be a lot of land to irrigate as you seem to have a huge place there. So, what do you do when your trees produce all the fruit there .. lol? Do you eat them? Do you know that coconut is known as the miracle fruit? There have been many articles and books written on it. A few years back, I started changing my cooking oil to coconut oil and include coconut milk and flour into my diet. It has brought tremendous improvement to my health situation. I've heard that coconut water is also a super nutrient drink, but I have to read more about it to find out if it contains a high sugar content which I'm trying to avoid. There's even someone on the internet selling fresh coconut water online....See MoreHow cold can phoenix canariensis withstand?
Comments (8)Yeah, Im going to say they can handle about down to 20F. Some are grown well in the southern parts of the outer banks of NC but thats a mild zone 8b maybe even a borderline 9a. I think lower than 20F will kill it, but they can definitely handle below 30F (they were not damaged in many parts of central florida last winter from the historic freeze which brought temps to the mid to upper 20s a few times at night). They dont like wet and cold. Thats a very bad combo for most palms and a very common combo for areas in the east during the winter months. There are other palms and even other phoenix palms that can handle lower temps and give you a similar effect. I think a pindo palm would the the next best thing for a more cold tolerant version of that type of effect. But I think you can get a phoenix canariensis to survive the winter with some protection. In a zone 8 I dont think your temps drop below 20 too often so just protect it when temps are forecasted to drop below 25F if you really want one. Good luck! -Alex...See Moreus_marine
