chili pepper to grow, what would it be?

I have very limited space, mainly because of very young kids who try to eat everything -- particularly if it is red and looks like a berry.

So I can just squeeze in one pepper plant indoors, in my study, where they cannot get at it.

I like eating them fairly hot, going through Tabasco sauce and ground cayenne at a fair rate, as well as tiny bird's eyes, used sparingly. I am most happy with a sauce ranging between about 5000 and 8000 Scovilles -- more than that and I start to battle a bit. (Must be getting old).

So I am not looking for insane heat, though I realise this is very much determined by how one uses them.

My growing conditions would be a bright shelf with strong western sun in summer. Home heated comfortably in winter.

Anything "low maintenance" that would be good for a beginner?

I would appreciate any thoughts.

Cheers.
