Oremental sweet potatoe vines

Fall has arrieve, it's been drizzling for 3 days after

a 2 1/2 inches of rain.

I am anxious to get in the garden and pull plants.

Last week I cut the okra, picked peppers and tomato.

Also dug my SP and irish . My first year for planting

them. I have some oremental sp vines and want to know

if there is fruit on them, I have them in large pots.

If there is , I would like to know if it is eatable.

I have had good luck with all my flowrs, mums are

growing great and MG vines are covering the arbors.

I had 2 crops of radishes and still eating onions.

Ornamental sweet potato vines do produce edible sweet potatoes, but I've never eaten one so I cannot comment on their taste or texture or lack of such. I always dig them up and save them for next year by letting them dry and cure for a couple of weeks and then storing them on the floor in my unheated pantry.

If you let the ornamental sweet potato plants freeze before you dig the sweet potatoes, they won't last long in storage.

I am a preschool teacher, each year I have my class start a sweet potato plant by placing it in water in the classroom. It will take a few days for it to root then in about a week it will start growing the vine. The vine will grow very fast! When spring comes we plant it in our flower garden. The vine will spread a very long distance. We dig up our sweet potato plant close to Thanksgiving. Last year our one potato produced 25 potatoes of varying sizes. We found several recipes to cook up for lunch. I am sorry I don't know how to attach photos, my students always have fun with this project. We will have to try a sweet potato leaf salad now!

I dug up ONE tuber a couple of weekends ago. I know there must be more, but I couldn't reach way down inside that planter box - it's about 4' deep. It was about 6" long and about 6" in circumference. Not too big, really. But I put it in my cabinet where I store my potatoes. Looks like a regular old sweet potatoe to me. Moni - yours is HUMONGOUS! Susan

Last year I had two types and tried to keep them but they rotted and I threw them away. I started fresh with two small plants this year. I dumped them out a couple of days ago and they were very root bound, but I dug through the soil and there was no potato. About 20 million roots and a few just a little thicker than the others, but no tuber like I have had in the past.

Carol,

I have had that happen some years, and I don't know why they make tubers some years and not others. Maybe it is weather related?

Since we haven't had a real threat of frost and mine are in pots on the patio, I haven't 'ended' their growing season yet, but I hope that when it does end, they have produced tubers for next year!

Hello Ladies, thanks for the replys. I went
out in the drizzle and dug the O S W P
well, there were none in three plantings.,
I wasn't too surprised. So I will just start
new ones next year. I had the purple and the
light green vines.
More heavy drizzle again today and was no fog.

We have the same yucky weather here.

I guess we'll have to try to figure out why some years they make potatoes, and some years they don't.

This year I had two diferent purples.....I know one is 'Blackie' and think the other one is 'Sweet Carolina Bewitched Purple'. I also have the chartreuse one called 'Marguerite' and the tri-colored 'Pink Frost'.

When I have to harvest mine because a freeze is coming, I'll let you know if any of them made tubers this year.

I'm wondering if we had too much moisture and not enough heat. With regular field-grown sweet potatoes, it is excess fertility that causes all foliage/no tuber....or, allowing the runners to root into the surrounding soil. With my ornamentals, though, I haven't fertilized them....and they haven't been allowed to root in elsewhere either because they're in containers on the patio. So, in a few days or a few weeks, I guess we'll see if I did or didn't get tubers.
