Can I still save my Plumerias?-PICS

I bouth these cuttings one is firm has growth at the top, but yellowing and looks like rotting at bottom. The other is shriveled up, but has growth at top. Can someone please advise on what I should do. Have 7 other plumerias that are successful, but never had this issue.

Hello lizplumies - the first one looks like you need to cut to green and start over. As for the second one, I'd give a squeeze at the base and if it's hard then just keep misting the top portion. Good luck and happy growing.

Hi Kasie, Thanks for the advise. Should I let my cutting dry or can I re-plant right away?

Sorry to hear about your storm. Home you got some rain though! Yes, you can root the top portion. Cut off all the leaves about 1/4" from the stem with a scissors. Ths petioles will eventually dry up and fall off. This keeps the branch from drying out too much. Now, let your cutting sit for about a week or two in a shady dry place. Indoors is OK. You want the cut edge to heal and dry before you try rooting it. You may need to recut it if it's all jagged. Then I would try to root it this summer yet. And yes, clean up the old break on the rooted plant too. You could cut it at an angle so that rain does not collect in it after it heals. I'm sure others can offer better help too.

Looking dead and being dead or two different conditions.Is the bottom part dark and squishy(root or stem rot) or is it hard and dark to light brown(sunburned). You can poke a pin into the dark and if dark goop comes out it is toast and if white latex comes out it is still ok. If it is a rot you need to cut up to green wood and remove all the leaves and inflos. You can wait a week and then plant it watering only once until new leaves grow or you can store it away in a mild temperature to cool temperature spot not on the floor until next spring. If it is sunburn, take a paper towel roll (cardboard center of towels) split longwise and snap it around the stem to block the sun. It will scar over the burn later.

I'm going to give them at least one more shot of fertilizer. I'm in Bradenton across the state from you and we've "cooled off" all the way down to the mid-70's at night so there's still some growing time left in the year. Suzanne

Well it probably will fail but you've got nothing to lose by treating as a cutting.As it's not dormant you probably won't get away with leaving outside in a cold frame 'til next year(as in hardwood cuttings)so I'd dust the calloused area with rooting powder,put it back in the pot,water and cover with a plastic bag and leave on a window sill out of direct sun.Keep an eye out for fungus though,remove the bag daily to let it breathe.It's a long shot but not sure what else you could try.Btw,can sugar maples be propagated by cuttings? or is that why you layered? Hello LizPlumies - I know that the rule of thumb is to cut and let cut end dry for several days or so. But because my area is hot, windy and dry, I've always cut, dip in rooting hormone and plant right away. I find that it's better to water the pot of soil before putting the cutting in. Also, some variety of plumerias tends to be more difficult to root. I hope others will chime in. Good luck Liz.

Hi Kasie,
there seems to be several ways to start a cutting. I let it totally dry out for about a week, then plant. Celadine's roots died..want that one to make it, so let it dry..large cutting.Planted in pearlite mix.

Some soak it first, then plant. I am trying something differnt on one cutting, a fresh cut, put in rootone and planted it in pearlite mix. Don't know if it will grow or take. but this is aztec gold, have a back up rooted plant. Would hate for anyone else to try this..

Hello Karen - I'm sure your AG will root easily. After all, you've been a Plumie Mama for a long time now.

Since 2003, I've tried rooting in straight perlite, playground sand, bark, pumice. And then I tried the mixture of: 50/50 sand and soil, 50/50 soil and perlite, 50/50 soil and pumice, 50/50 bark and soil, cactus mix (got to be too expensive), rooting in my soil on the property (too heavy). Rooting in water plus Super Thrive was a disaster for me because the smell of Super Thrives just knocks me out. So after many sweat, tears, tears and more tears, got blooms...SMILE. The soil I am currently using contains chipped wood, perlite, sand and dirt. I buy this by the bulk. I use this for my plumerias and all of the plants that I grow in pots.

Also, the time of year your're rooting them makes a big difference. And so this takes it to the next level of getting a greenhouse. Now I root year round:)
