Does Foxtail palm plants transplant well?

Hey,

I found that Lowes have some Foxtails, 3 plants to a pot for cheap. I got a pot and want to transplant. These plants are about 5 foot tall. If I just pull them apart and repot them, would they live? There is a mass of roots at the bottom, but I think I can pull them apart without to much damage. What are my odds of these living?

Fishtails are no problem to transplant go for it !

Thanks a lot Susie. I just bought my house at the end of last year, and I am trying to get some landscaping done there. The people before me didn't have the same tastes as I do, and they really let the grass go. My major issue is the grass/weeds, so I will probably be posting some questions on what to do about that shortly. I do like tropicals, especially palms and anything that has nice color to it. Your 10' tall Foxtail palm weighs at least 200 pounds, so keep that in mind when moving it. Dig up as much of the rootball as possible and replant it wherever you like. Make sure you water it in good and water it daily for at least 2 weeks unless it rains. If it's too shady for the palm, why would you think about planting Hibiscus, a full sun plant in that spot? And those new Arecas that are popping up are from seed. You can carefully dig them up and plant them wherever you like.

Thank you Fawnridge. Since some of the pots have very little soil, I will try soaking them in water and see if it will expose the roots more. If it seems like separating the roots will cause a lot of damage, I may just have to plant as is.

Foxtails are very tough palms. As long as that new sper is green you are ok. Mark the speer with a sharpie and watch for movement, it will make you feel better to see it move. I transplanted a 20 footer last spring and it did great. Goodluck! Brian brianx2004x@aol.com

I have one about that size that someone gave me. I have had it for years, seems to be on the slow side. I found the 5 foot plants at lowes...3 for 14.00, just think how many years I saves, plus thats less than $5 each. Now if they would get something I really like it would be nice.
