best garden centers in the tulsa area

I am a national garden center consultant wintering in the Tulsa area. Could you give me some names of the best garden centers in the metro area? I would like to visit them.

Oh, come on John. Who would winter in Tulsa? How about Palm Springs or Orlando? Tulsa?

Oh, well. Southwood seems to be one of the best in this area. Many of us are angry that a very good one closed a year or two ago. I haven't been to Stringers for some time, and there is another one on Memorial that isn't too big. I don't know if Juniper Hills is going to continue or not. I do think that "Doc" has retired and the last few times I went there I wondered if they were going to close, and possibly just supply to businesses or do contract work.

Nobody here sells older roses, and I don't think we have the variety that many gardeners would like. I mail order so that I can get what I want.

I hope I am helping, and if you are really working for a garden center I hope you tell us -- and also tell us that the garden center is going to start selling heritage roses.

I like Stringer. I also like Colebrook Nursery in West Tulsa or Berryhill . The owners are very knowledgeable. They have healthy stock.

Hi - I am originally from and moving back to central Maine - Skowhegan area. Yes - since it is lovely sunny if cool and the first blooms are blooming down here in NJ/Pa -I sometimes think it's abit nuts to head north to garden. Schneekoppe is a rugosa with white/lavender blooms - like a white flower in a shadow - lovely - also called snow pavement. I love perennials - many kinds. I love natives - and I photographed alot in my dad's woods last spring - and donated lots of food to the local mosquitos. I've also really been enjoying the tender perennials for the last few years - plants that are perennial and need to be grown for a longer period - and are of course more expensive. I often use them in the jungles I call containers. Some I've grown from seed - lots are available at nurseries (which is often where I work). Here's a list of some of my favorites plants - heavily influenced by the flower show I went to this week - my lists change daily: Peonies - I love peonies - It's the only thing I've planted in Maine so far - bought some pale singles at the CG fair last year. I will miss tree peonies! Phormium - great spikey foliage - good colors Melianthus - also great foliage - lovely serrated edges - stinky though. Coleus - I didn't like these for many years - but now I love them. Unfortunately I didn't keep my favorites over the winter this year. Clivia - I know it's not a garden plant but my orange ones are in bloom right now. I took a photo of an absolutely magnificient yellow one at the flower show to inspire my tiny little hopefully yellow one. Poppies and Irises - Almost any kind. Brunnnera, mysotis, pulmonaria - all these blue for-get-me-not relatives are lovely. I like the pink ones too. Helleborus, Hepatica, Columbines, Thalictrum, Aconitum - hmmm the whole ranunculus clan including of course Delphiniums. The blues are wonderful - and they don't love NJ at all - so I'm looking forward to having happy Delphiniums again. All right that's enough for today. What kind of gardens do you have - what colors do you like? I'm having lots of fantasies - and I have a small field and a large pile of manure - but I have to keep myself in check until I get practical things like walls and floors in my house. bye now agmss

I might add that Sunshine Nursery is the best source for native plants in Oklahoma. Satterlee's still carries a good variety of unusual and rare plants. They carry a lot of Japanese Maples, but their prices are high. When I ran out of tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) in August, they were the only ones in town who still had some, untreated, that I could feed my Monarch caterpillars. O'Higgins in Midwest City replaced the old Warren's which was an excellent source of rare and unusual plants not normally found in Oklahoma. But, after Mr. Warren passed away, the kids sold the nursery to O'Higgins. They are not as "free-spirited" as Mr. Warren. Precure is a good one for host plants for caterpillars and they don't spray their plants either. You can buy parsley with black swallowtail caterpillars already on it! Yippee! Horn's does carry some different things, and they usually have some beautiful aroids in the greenhouse, which are actually hardy in the ground in Oklahoma (colocasias and alocasias). While they are pretty plant savvy, you still have to KNOW what you are buying in the way of something out of the ordinary, because they usually don't have a good answer for you. TLC is pretty good, especially if you hit their Midnight Madness or Moonlight Madness sales. I have found that if you hit Lowe's or HD at the right time, you can get lucky with some very uncommon plant species. One year I found some rare colocasias and alocasias at Lowe's, labeled entirely incorrect. However, I knew what they were, so got a really great deal for some plants I would have paid twice that on the net. There is a small nursery that sells plants at the herb festivals and farmer's markets around the state called "Wild Things Nursery". THey sell only native and herbal plants. They even bring the caterpillars and eggs with them to the events. Very nice plants for very nice prices. I know this is not actually a nursery, but some folks might want to know about it. I didn't know about a St. Patrick's Day planting schedule for other plants, but both my grandfather and my father always planted potatoes as close to St. Patrick's Day as possible. Of course you must take into account the weather and soil conditions. I watch the 10 day weather forecast closely, and plant accordingly. For instance, seeing that we have several above average temperatures ahead during the next ten days, AND the forecast for rain today, I spent a lot of time in the garden preparing beds for seeding, then planted my first batch of onions and potatoes yesterday (March 13). I also planted a new Red Blaze Climbing Rose. It seems that if the soil becomes saturated and cold weather returns, you can often miss out on optimal planting dates. Right now, my peonies are sprouting up to about 6 inches and my lilacs are full of unopened buds. Another thing I watch for is the leafing of Oak trees- I feel more comfortable in planting warmer weather crops when the Oaks tell me that warm weather has arrived. Ron Z

In addition to Ashcombe's and SKH, Highland Gardens in Camp hill has a very good selection of perennials, shrubs, trees herbs, and annuals. Their variety of shade perennials is exceptional. Their staff is very knowledgable and very helpful especially on weekdays when they are not so busy. Also went to Black Creek Nursery in East Earl last spring - great prices on annuals, perennials and vegetables - plan to go back this year.

I am here in Tulsa now and I am going to start touring garden centers, scouting around to see where I would like to be. Sammy, my son and daughter in law live here, so being here with them over the winter will be very nice for me. Too long on the road....need time to stop and be with them.

I am an expert on roses and I want to find a place where I can grow and sell them. It seems that Tulsa gardeners have a special place in their hearts for roses. I am impressed with the cultural drive of the city and I look forward to being involved in the arts of the area.

This is a good start for you. contact numbers and address is in the yellow pages of phone book.

Not certain how much help is needed now in the winding down growing season. I went there last week to order some 'Easy Going' shrub roses for pick-up next April, and business during the time I was there seemed steady but not heavy. Lots of fall blooming beautiful roses. Some roses starting early signs of winding down in adjusting to cold and even soon arriving freezing temps.

I visited several nurseries that were on your list. Southwood was impressive. I also visited Stringers and Colebrook. Where is Berryhill. I cannot seem to find an address for it??

Berryhill is the name of the little community near Colebrook nursery. Sorry for the confusion.

It would make a great name for a nursery though! :)

I like Stringer just because it is close for me. Stringer is nice, almost too clean feeling. Im told there is a nice nursery in Sand Springs somewhere too.

Riddle Plant Farm in Sand Springs is on highway 97 a couple of miles south of the Keystone Expressway. A little further from Tulsa than Colebrook but easier to find.

Currently, I think Stringer is the best combo of convenience, selection, and price.

I like Southwoods, but haven't bought much in the way of plants there.

Binding Stevens is sorely missed and for the longest time was clearly the best nursery in the state. OKC's version of Binding Stevens (close as we get anyway) is TLC nurseries. Specifically, the main store off Memorial Road. You really should take a trip down here to visit them. If Binding Stevens and Southwoods had a baby, it would be TLC, lol.

There are others here in OKC that would be worth a visit, but since you're in the Tulsa area I'll hold off on mentioning them. :)
