white stuff under leaves!?!?

I have severaly plants growing inside. I found this under the leaves of my golden cayenne and another plant. I thought at first it was salts from my foliar spray but really doesnt look like that. I had some ladybugs come into the house and into the garden. Outside is coming alive with many bugs. Under 60X magnification it looks like it could be tiny egg clusters. Any ideas?

I would spray with an oil spray like neem oil or other oil sprays. you want organic. the spray should dry out and leave a cover over the eggs and hopefully kill them.

one is called Ultra Fine Oil it is a super find parafin wax that coats the eggs and bugs and can thus kill them.

The white stuff are whiteflies and their eggs, we have an infestation problem with them in South Florida. Whiteflies are from the tropics and can carry a disease called tomato yellow leaf curl virus. Leafhoppers also carries it. Once your plant is infected with leaf curl virus, the plant will almost stop growing and not produce anything, there is no cure. I'm not saying whiteflies definitely carry the virus, they may not, but it is something I've very wary of. I was not able to grow tomatoes for the most of 2015 because of them. Whiteflies like warm temperature so there are much less of them during the cooler months. They prefer shade, warmth, and protection from wind. They are attracted to nightshade plants, the virus infect nightshade plants such as tomato, pepper, goji, potato, basil. But they are attracted to a wider variety of plants while not infecting them, like the "bidens" plants (common lawn "weed"), brassica crops, banana and other type of leaves that may provide good shades. This season growing tomatoes in spring with the cooler temperature I have less problem with them. Also with mulching and keeping the plants healthy reduces my pests issues. I notice whiteflies like to attack the lower sick leaves, so I pruned them and maintain a good airflow in the bottom.

I agree with bird poop, squish the caterpillar, and don't worry about the holes in leaves. Annabelle is a plant you could run over with a truck and it will come back. I've never had leaf diseases, though I have the caterpillars that bind the leaves together in early spring that I squish. Even if it were disease, it most likely wouldn't spread to other plants beyond related hydrangeas since most foliar diseases are specific to certain plants. Even powdery mildew, which occurs in many plants, is different organisms causing it for different types of plants. So no worries. Over the 15 years or so I've had Annabelle, I have - had mice and voles eat the bark off every branch in the winter - had 4 feet of snow come barreling off the roof and break every branch - rudely dug up rooted branches or even just pieces of large roots, plopped them in a plastic-bag-lined cardboard box with some soil, and given them away to other gardeners to plant. Regardless they grow and bloom without missing a beat, though if winter damage is too severe, I do prune off the damaged branches to the ground. I think the only thing that can damage Annabelle hydrangea is too little water and too much sun together.

Doesn't have to be neem oil but you do have to get the horticultural oil of your choosing to the underside of the leaves, where these pests are, or don't waste your time. Commercial insecticidal soaps can also be helpful in controlling adults and nymphs on the underside of the leaves. My best suggestion is to use a horticultural oil three or four times a year....early fall, late winter, and maybe early summer after the flowering period is over. I wouldn't spray a soap or oil on buds that have started to show color. Read and follow the directions carefully to avoid causing problems Oils smother the nymphs and eggs, allowing you to keep ahead of the population. These insects may have numerous generations per year, depending on where you are, and can cause a deteriorating situation in just a few months. Do evaluate the conditions. Unhappy azaleas are definitely more prone to lacebug infestations, as gardengal says.

how close are they to a grow light? boiling the fluids inside the leaves does that when they are too close to an HID lamp.

white spider mites also do something similar. got webs at the base of the plants?

Whatever it is it's concentrated near the leaf veins.
It could potentially be early signs of Potyvirus (chile vein mottle).

Are the spots on the undersides of the leaves slightly raised?

If so, it's edema -- an environmental thing which doesn't require removal or treatment.

yes they are raised. I also haven't seen it change/spread significantly since noticing it the first day. It doesn't seem to effect the plants in question and I have put them back with the others now.

if it was mildew it should wipe off to some point shouldn't it? I am thinking my conditions aren't to good for mold or mildew but I don't know.

I have had mites before. I am familiar with those lil buggers and am very diligent in looking for them. My light which is 1000w HPS is farther (~3ft) than I want (prefer -2ft) it from the plants. I am pretty familiar with my lights also so I can assure you my lights do nothing negative to my plants.

I looked at your link. From what I read it probalby isnt that, but I would have liked if they had included a pic.

I think it is under control now. They will all get to go out and play in 2 more weeks.
