I have my plants in part shade in moist soil but the plants have been shriveling ever since summer had began and now I have to cut off whole branches as they die.
I don't know, but this is a horribly invasive plant that is contributing to the destruction of waterways and has been declared a noxious weeds in some parts of North America. I grew it once and never will again. My advice is to pull it out. It also reseeds like crazy. It spreads hundreds and hundreds of seeds and I swear that every single one must germinate in the spring.
Listed as noxious here, you can check for your own state by typing impatiens glandulifera, followed by the name of your state into any search engine.
When I was growing it, aphids were about the only thing that ever bothered it; it would look clean one day and have an enormous infestation almost overnight. Have you noticed aphids?
Grew extremely well here; no problems whatsoever. Shot its seeds 6 feet in all directions. Then I learned it had been declared an invasive plant in Oregon. No wonder!
Anyway, the original plants and *all* it's self-sown progeny are gone now.
I was wondering if I could control it where it was but it just sounds like it's not worth it now. Now I have a spot to plant another columbine!
I would love to plant the native impatiens, the jewel weed but the only place I can find that is in the woods... I think I'm going to have to go hiking.
