help with bee id

Yesterday, I watched a huge bee-like thing move around, hovering. It was close to as thick around as a bumble, but it had a shortish thorax and an elongated abdomen. Mostly black, I think, but had two distinct horizontal yellow stripes on the abdomen. Small wings in proportion to the overall size of the thing. It was almost as long as the first two joints of my thumb, and with a curl to the strongly pointed end of the abdomen. Huge.

Today, I saw another that was smaller, but similar. Clearly the same kind of bee. Half to two-thirds the size of the one yesterday. Shape a little less elongated. A touch of yellow on the thorax, and a double band of yellow on the back of the abdomen.

It moved clumsily around me and then landed on the chair a couple of feet away. It had a good-sized ant firmly pinned between it's mandibles. Over about a minute, the ant gradually stopped moving, and died, and then the bee flew away with it.....

Never seen these critters before. Clues requested??
