Name that Palm

I was down on the beach last weekend around Navarre and drove throught some of the housing areas to see what had happen after the hurricanes from last year. I took a few pictures of what was growing along the coast.

Your job is, if you choose too, is to name that palm.

Are these not beautiful or what. I need 2 of these at my door.

6 I almost stole some seed from this plant. Look at all these seed. Do you think they would have cared. My wife said, dont let them see you. She was far it too. :-) I was chicken so I drove on.

Those are the most beautiful palms I've ever seen, like an overgrown pineapple. The pinnates are certainly my favorites.

I had to run to my window and look out at the 11,000 foot mountain at my doorstep to remember why I still like it here.

1 and 4 Phoenix canariensis, Canary Island Date palms

3 is a pair of Washintona filifera or robusta

7 Sagos

5 Sabal palmetto/cabbage palm or S. texana

6 jelly palm, Butia capitata, which are also fruiting here in San Antonio

David- I do have a few takers from seed collected in Cuba on the biennial. Maybe I shouldn't make that well known as big brother is probably watching! If you want some Ill send you an email back. Steve- Think even bigger! E. whitelockii is large, but one or two cycads trump it in leaf size. Did you get the Nypas yet?

I purchased it for $4.99 on April 18, 2010 - so it has been in my yard for eight years. The pot was labeled Canary Island Date Palm.Here's how it looked on June 16, 2010 (above). That's it on the right-hand side of the photo. You may have to get out your magnifying glass.Here it is in April 2012 (above). March 2013 (above). May 2014 (above). April 2015 (above). April 2015 (above). April 2016 (above). April 2017 (above). I recently had a gardening friend over - another avid gardener like me - who considers himself somewhat of a palm expert. He told me it is definitely not CIDP. This was huge news to me! He wasn't sure what it is. (I wonder if he really knows what he is talking about, or not?) My two neighbors to the north each have a gorgeous CIDP (above) and mine is planted in the same position as theirs. I thought I was joining the club, LOL. I am a long way from being in their elite club, but I thought I was getting there. Well, I guess more time will tell. Ricky and Tropicbreeze, great to hear from both of you! The "Ponytail Palm" is really not a palm at all. It is a member of the Lilaceae (lily family), and is known by several names. It has earned the name "elephant's foot" because of its bulbous base. Because of its base and thin trunk have some people call it a bottle palm. It is native to the desert of Mexico and is somewhat of a curious interior landscaping plant.

We've been living here in Florida for about seven years now and thought we knew most of the palms and cycads. When we had a 3/4+ acre yard about two years ago, we had a very nice "triangle" palm, a beautiful Canary Island Date ("cross") palm, several nicely shaped Pindo Palms, some Queen Palms as well as the typical Robellini's, etc.
The home we just moved from had a really nice (in great shape and very healthy) Chinese Fan Palm. It was not a "fast grower" in height (like your typical Washintonia) and in our "opinion" it was the "nicest" palm we ever had with the Canary Island date ("cross") coming in second.
This "Ponytail Palm" (Elephant's foot) we now have is NOT an "attractive" plant (tree?) at all :-( !! Sad to admit, we have future plans of "removing it" and replacing it with either a Triangle Palm or Chinese Fan (in this case we would move it "away" from the Lanai several more feet)!!

florida_wen....I know, what you mean about the ponytail palm. I dont care for them either. In fact, I have 2 plants that are 3 foot tall if someone wants to trade me some palm seed for them. I will be glad to box these up and send them to a new home.

I like triangles too, I am growing 3 right now. I am looking at a Champagne Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe Indica) right now, hoping to get one soon.

O-Dude...I'm sure that if you had knocked on the door and politely asked if you could have some of the seeds, they would've been more than happy for you to take them. To a lot of homeowners...the seeds are a nuisance...and are more than likely tossed in the garbage. You need to go back...Z

Hey Jetstream...I wished I had of ask but when you are vacationing everything goes so fast. Hit and run. LOL. I am about 7 hours away from them so it will be next year before I go back. Next time I will ask, and if they say yes, I will get them all. :-)
